I am no tractor expert so bear with me if I name things wrong. My old M was outside and we got snow, it was about 10*F and I went to start it, it popped right off like always but was running wide open, should have been idle, tryed it several times with the same result, but a Knipco heater on the governor and carb area and after 10 minutes tried it again and it ran and idled normally, only ran it long enough to put it in the 55* F shop. Took the side cover off the governor(?) and all looked normal. Let it sit in the warm shop overnite and the next day went to move snow. It was about 10* F outside again. Ran normally and then it slowly starting running faster and faster again, when it got running to fast the change gears I put it back in the shop. Next day...same exact results. Today, it sat in the shop for a full 24 hours and I went to move snow again. Now it started normally and only runs wide open again! Tried it several times. Put a knipco heater on it (even thought it was the in the warm shop overnite) and no change , still starts and runs only wide open, keep in my mind this is with the governor in the idle position. Please help, whats wrong?

I'd guess it's in the throttle tube. Brobably had ice in it from crankcase condensation. Might have rusted stuck or boken the peg off? That's where I'd check first as it is a readily replacable item. third party image

Most likely its the round tube that hooks the govener to the carb try loosing the screws a little at the carb and twisting it slighly when it starts to rev. The fix would be spraying the inside of the tube with something that wont freeze and also the carb where the little tang from the tube hooks in make sure there is no moisture there. And make sure you getbthe tang into the butterfly properly when you reasemble or it will rev up on you. AJ

Had that happen not long ago. I found the problem to be crystalized gas or soom such stuff jamming the linkage between the carb and the govenor at the carb end. Check the linkage in the tube. You have to take the carb off to do that throughly although you can loosen the tube at both ends and kind of see in there and maybe flush it out with WD45 temperarily. My suggestion...

i will check that stuff right away, also, what is that small tube running from near the thermostat down to the governor area, what does it do and could that be a problem area from freezing like I described?

that tube is moisture vent for the gov.,it goes through the head into top of head under valve cover and out the back side and then by tube to the air intake pipe, vacuum at this point sucks out moisture in engine., also this pipe as it lays in head has a hole in it to clear valve area. Mine was pluged in fitting coming of the head, drilled it clean, was hard as a rock, blow air back through pipe blocking hole in pipe in head area to check if clear, no problem for 10 yr's, good at -35 after that I'm no good but them I'm 72
