A friend put a C123 engine in a C, but he didn't put the water pump on it, now it runs hot just driving down the driveway. I asked him did he leave the thermostat on it, he said no. Did the C's have pressure caps on the radiator? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Kevin

Kevin,
In addition to notes below, the C123's had a different headgasket which restricted flow from the water pump by using smaller openings in the water jackets going to the head. The C113 gasket has bell shaped openings matched to the ports, where the C123 gasket has smaller round holes.

In the last few years i have torn down at least 10 of these type engines and not uncommon to find the ports where the coolant goes down by the sleeves and out the lower fitting plugged with junk sometimes even hard enough to have to bust it loose. Even adding a water pump would not have helped some of them. You can remove the radiator and lower fitting that the hose connects to and with air pressure and a long probe and water these nickle sized holes can be unplugged. Lets face it there is a lot of bad water out there.

Right you are gene. I took the head and the bottom water inlet off my B one time and flushed down through with the pressure washer. Got 2 handfuls of crap out of it from around the sleeves. Only 4 little holes, doesn't take much to plug it up.

According to my manual the late production C's had
the thermo-sighoning system with a pressure type cap. They recommend the 165-190 degree thermostat. He should feel the radiator lightly
to see if it feels hot all over or has hot spots
and cool places. Radiator tubes may be getting plugged restricting coolant flow.

When I had an A it wouldn't heat up unless you were plowing. Hal

I was not sure if the thermo-sighoning had a thermostat.

No, a thermo-syphon system does not use a thermostat. Thermostats were only added when water pumps were put on.
