The engine has developed a knock. It sounds like its coming from the top. I have been told its either a P rod or there needs to be an adjustment.
Are there any paticular way of telling without pulling apart the engine which it is..does one thing act differently than the other when it needs repair?

MY FATHER HAD THE SAME SYMPTOMS WITH HIS SW-4.
DROPPED THE PAN TO SEE IF IT HAD A BAD CONNECTING ROD.THEY WERE ALL GOOD,PULLED THE HEAD OFF; A SCREW FROM THE CARB. (FROM THE BUTTERFLY VALVE) WAS IMBEDDED IN THE TOP OF THE PISTON. FILED OUT THE MARKS IN THE PISTON , REPLACED THE MISSING SCREW IN CARB. THAT WAS ABOUT 20 YRS. AGO & ITS BEEN FINE EVER SINCE. EE

If tractor is indeed a 54, 4 series its worth fixing or of interest to some collectors the way it is.

Might also be the cam drive gear nut has worked loose or the cam gear hub has busted. Not uncommon on account of loading from the live hydraulic pump which drives off the cam gear.

Does the rap change or go away when you put a load on the hydraulics of when the RPM"s are run up? If it does you"ve found the problem.

Incidentally an improperly adjusted pushrod makes a click sound once every other revolution of the crank. And the engine can run for years like this.

A cam gear on the other hand makes more of a heavy clunk every 1/2 crank revolution. It may run a for many hours with a failing cam gear, but when the cam hub fails completely the engine will simply quit.

Push rods are usually more of a "rap" as oppsosed to a knock. Try adjusting the valves, both intake and exhaust, should be 20 thou cold, go from there. Also ensure that there is enough oil in the engine and that you have enough oil pressure.

Yes you are right its a rap there is enough oil pressure is at 40. we are going to try the adjustments tonight. If it is the P rod how long would I be able to run the engine that way?
