Still trying to get the 340 running. Done melted the starter down cranking it so much. Have tried 2nd set of plugs, points, condensor. still no run!Replaced coil again still no go! Took whole distrubitor and coil and plug wires off my running 340 timed it all up ,still won't fire a lick even got mad and sprayed either to it still no fire, not even a hick-up. checked with test light wire to coil hot ok! When she cranks the wire from - side dist flashes ok! dist to points lead stud flashes, points flash, very little spark at plug tip. carb floods, but no run not even a sputt! plugs gap .023 valves set .014 new rings, pistons, any ideas, while I'm waiting on new starter!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! Thanks

When you get No1 piston up on the compression stroke to TDC. You need to remove the valve cover and see if if the valves on No1 cylinder are open or closed. Very important to see if the valve timing is off. Hal

What sparkplug wires are you using? You need copper wire plug wires. You should remove all the plugs and let the engine dry out over night.
Then spray engine oil into each cylinder & hand crank the engine over for the oil to coat your
cylinders. You should note which way the rotor turns as you hand crank the engine. If it turns
CW your plug wires at the distributor cap need to installed in this order:

2-1
4-3 or if it turns CCW this way: Hal

1-2
3-4

PS: I would set those valves to .020" until you
get the engine started. Are you sure the distr is in time? Rotor should point to No1 plug wire in distr when No1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. You can check this while awaiting the starter.

You say the carb floods. After all the cranking did you take out a plug and see if it was soaked with gasoline.

I have exactly the same problem but my tractor was idling and then just quit. Now she does just like yours and won't start. Has real weak spark. See my post above . If you find your problem, let me know. flansam@softcom.net

You may have lost the oil seal around the piston rings. I have had two engines that sat to long and one that I sprayed ether in the cylinders. I put oil in the spark plug holes and let it run around the rings. Cranked the engine with the plugs removed. Put plugs back in and engine started to fire. Took me a long time to learn this.

Short Bolt, that flashing test lamp on the coils low side and at the points terminal tells me the coils primary has voltage to it ((not sure if enough however?? use a voltmater over on the coils high input terminal to find out or just hot wire to the coils input to eliminate any ignition switch or wiring problems n see what happens),,,,, ,,, and is continuous,,,,, ,,and the points circuit is working and closing a good connection to ground,,,,, ,,and the condensors likely not shorted, and those are all a good thing n necessary.

Sooooo ooooo , is the coil firing?? I suspect it is !!!!! Remove the coil wire end from the distributor cap (leave coil end intact) and place that bare end to within 1/8 inch from tractor steel, turn her on n crank her over n see if a good blue spark is jumping that gap???? It should each time the points break open, does it????? ?

Thennnnn nnn if the coil is firing, replace the distributor cap n try the plugs, are they all firing when removed from the engine with their wires atatched but sides up against ground??? If not, theres a cap or rotor or plug wire or plug problem IFFFFF FF you have the correct cap and its in time in register with the distributor that is, which I suspect is so. To fire the plugs, the cap n timing have to be correct so that when the points break open the rotor tip is lined up with one of the internal cap tower pick ups.

If the plugs or plug wires seem to be firing, the next question is are they firing at the right timing ????? ????? ???? If shes not in time, one may get backfiring or loud pops n bangs out the exhaust or firing back out the carb etc. Just because the coil fires and all plugs fire dont mean the distributor is in time with the rest of the engine BUTTTTT T she may well pop n bang n backfire if thats the case, does it??? Or it just do NOTHING???

If it is in time, when the number one cylinder comes up to TDC on its Compression Power Stroke the points should be breaking open PLUS the rotors tip lined up with the internal tower pick up thats connected to the plug wire to the number one cylinder and then the cylinders that follow.

See if the coil is firing per the test above,,,,, ,,,See if the plugs are all firing per the above,,,,, ,,,then see if they are indeed firing at the RIGHT TIME????? ?

Let us all know, good luck n God Bless

John T

There 2 parts you didn't say you replaced. either one or both will stop spark. Cap and rotor.

You are checking for voltage at the coil with a test light, are you getting 12Volts here? Even thought it is lighting a test light, it may not have enough voltage there to start it. I had a tractor a couple of weeks ago, one of the guys was using a test light, thought it had 6volts at coil, because it lit test light, so why no fire, found out it only had 3.4 volts, hooked a wire directly to coil from battery and it started right up and ran fine. Bad ignition switch. Might be something to check, especially if the fire to plugs are weak.

You need to remove No1 sparkplug & bring that piston up to TDC on the compression stroke. Then look to see where the rotor is pointing once you're at TDC. Both valves on No1 should be closed now. If the rotor turns CW your plug wires
should be in this order on the cap. Hal

2-1
4-3

sounds like my 340 when i first tried to start it up. It turned out that the distributer was 180 degrees out of time, All i did was switch the spark plug wires around. i think what i did was switched the number 1 wire with the number 3 wire, and the number 2 wire with the number 4 wire

hope this helps
