Hi all, I am restoring a 1940 Farmall H. The old stinky oil/some water was drained out of trans/diff cases. What would be good to put in there to clean up the inside without harming any seals.

Thanks.

When I flushed mine with diesel all the seals started leaking. But when I refilled with 80w90 all the leaking stopped....

Also, I drove mine around for an hour or so in cool weather but should have run it a little more to really clean things out better - I say this because I had the cover off a few weeks later and saw what was still left inside....

Drain it. Then put bunch of diesel fuel and drive it around and drain again mite even want to do this twice. I have sometimes put an air hose and turned on real low pressure to make the fuel "boil".

Dont use degreaser solvent if your not going to replace the old leather seals. I made that mistake by flushing a tranny on a 130 with 10 + 1 degreaser then filling with oil. Didnt notice it till the next day when all the oil was on the shop floor. Good thing it wasnt an M (15 gal worth). The best way I know without taking the top cap off is to remove the pto and drag it all out with some rags. WD 40 is also a good degreaser and a great hand cleaner.Good luck, its all a mess.

This advice came right from an IH mechanic. He said to drain out what you have in there, fill it with kerosene and take it for a drive. Drain that out and then fill with the proper fluid. He added that you should never do this with an engine, but it works great for the rear end. I think you will be surprised at what comes out with the kerosene. Yes, I have tried it and it works good.
