I have a very limited knowledge of what makes a motor (Engine) run. Could someone recommend a means of obtaining the basic understanding and knowledge of this subject. I know there must be Videos, Books, courses, i.e., Vol Tech, College etc., that cover the charging system, ignition system, accessories, and battery operations. I would like to be able to trouble shoot through some process of elimination and be able to determine why the heck my Tractor will not start. You guys have been awful good to me in the past, but, I'd like to be able to figure some things out on my own. Any comments or recommendations short of going to mechanics school which would be a last resort. I want to thank you for any help you can give me.

for a basic explanation, check out the website:

.howstuffworks.com

some interesting stuff there. it covers quite a range of topics from household to automotive to nuclear, and everything between.
it won't tell you how to overhaul an engine, but it will tell you how it works.

If you want to know how they work and a lot more jump down to the ford 2N, 9N, and 8N forum and ask Dawn if she will give you the info on how to get a book put out by the army that I set her up with. It tells you more then you will ever believe and then some. Ya I know guys I said ford here but they all run the same way.

What makes a motor run? Fuel, compression, timing, and an ignition source.

We could go WAY into depth on this, but I think you would be better served hitting the local library...or do an internet search on "internal combustion engine" and be ready to read. There should be plenty of information avalailable to you. Start with the mechanics of what it takes to make an engine run, and then you may want to go more into depth from there. Good luck!

Farmer Dawn, over on the Ford "N" Board, found a good reference, in the public domain, at a US Army site.

If you read her post carefully, it explains how to download it for free, and save it to disc. It sounds like an invaluable basic reference... I haveen't had time to download it yet, myself.

Old automotive text books from used book stores. The older towards the fifties the better. There is nothing in newer books that help repair older units.
Engine diagnosis and repair, tune up, rebuilding are titles I'd look for.

Look around for a book named "Dykes Automotive and Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia". They are very old, but good. I got my first one when I was 14 years old, and I've used it al my life. It covers everything you need to know about older automotive equipment. Check flee markets, antique stores, E-bay, etc. Dykes is about 2 inches thick, and will have a blue cover. ken

I was told motors run on pre-installed smoke.
When the smoke escapes the motor is no good. Uh,that is electric motors. Internal combustion engines may be the same way.
