You may need to open the main jet adjusting screw
several turns CCW. This will increase the gas to the engine. Set the valve lash to .020" cold. Hal

Hal,
How do you set the valve lash?
Pull valve cover and adjust the nut on valve springs?

THANK YOU HAL FOR YOUR REPLY AND HELP

Sounds like a governor issue to me. Even if the engine is totally totally worn out, it would still have enough power to move the tractor in 1st through 4th. Beyond that, it wouldn"t have enough compression to even start.

Did you take the carburetor off? The connection between the carb and governor is kind of tricky to get right.

Nat,
I did take the carb & gov apart as part of replacing the head gasket.
What is tricky about connecting the carb and governor back up? I dont understand how the governor even works. Should I just buy a manual?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY
JON

I agree with old. You need to start from square one with headbolt torque, valve adjustment, timing etc.

Well that could be a number of things. Did you retorque the head after you had woarmed it up?? Are all the valves adjusted right, when you pull a head you need to readjust the valves. Are all the push rods for the valves where they should be, seen them fall out of place and then you will have no power. Do you maybe have a vacuum leak in the intake, or did you maybe get the carb on wrong and the govner isn't opening the carb up when it needs more gas, seen that also. Just a few of a long list that could be your problem. Also did it run right and have power before you changed the head gasket? Also is you fireing order correct that will also kill your power.
