I would like to put a loader on a wide front 1948 H. Any pros or cons to doing this? also what kind to purchase and approx cost? I will use just for assistance on moving things, etc. I am not a farmer, just getting older. Thanks for any info. Pictures would be nice if anybody has them.

I have had Paulson, Westendorf and StanHoist trip style loaders on H's & M's and I prefer the StanHoist for a good solid old loader as it totally pushes on the rear axle. That's what I have now on my '41 H and really like it. The guys are right here, it steers hard and is hard to trip if you load up that bucket but, if doing snow or misc things that are not real heavy, it works great. I used mine to "rake" the lawn this fall. Worked real good where leaves were heavy with "tilt" set upward so as not to scrape the lawn. Good luck.

A loader makes it much easier to pick things up and move them around. Adding a loader will make the tractor harder to steer. Hs are not set up for two way hydraulics, which would be nice, but not necessary. Depending on the make, a trip bucket can be hard to operate with a load of dirt in it.

MGB: Can't argue with anything Dave has told you, make close note of what he said.

There may be one other problem. If your H has the wide front with tyrods out front of axle, some loaders will not clear those tyrods. Just wanted to make you aware of that problem.

I'm forever about to put a JD #45 loader on my '47 H. I learned via some posts here you're supposed to put gussets from the front of the frame rails to the back axle or bottom of where the loader mounts on the back axle. This helps keep the stress off the bottom of the torque tube, which has been known to break during loader use. Do a search in the archives for the words 'loader' and 'gussets' and maybe 'trusses'. Allan in NE has posted some pics of how he did this with his H. They don't come up with his archived posts but maybe if you ask him nicely, he'll post them again. Also don't forget to tighten up the torque tube bolts - they frequently come loose and can also be a point of loader-use breakage.
