I don"t know the specification for resistance on the field, but it should be the same (within a few tenths of an Ohm) of other same voltage Farmall Generators. If it is not, then rebuilding the field might be in order.

Disconnecting the field terminal from the gen. then starting it, should keep the resistor from getting hot. If it does not then there are wiring problems.
Keep this going till the problem is fixed, or let us know the outcome.

Hey Jim, Yeppers I would like to hear the final fix on that rascal myself as we all spent a lot of time trying to finger that one out. Its just hard over the net to do a job that would be so simple if there and armed with a simple test lamp and a multi meter. It kept sounding like it was wired okay at which time Im beginning to wonder about the condition/quality if that darn resistor itself???

Take care,

John T

Thinned out oxidized resistors are like a lightbulb with 1500 hrs on it.
