I have a 46 M it has a gear box on top of transmission . its not for belt drive, or hydraulics, like i thought at first.I took it off to day . and it looks like a gear reduction . It has a shifter on right hand side. When you move shifter it sets gears in to mesh.

Hope you get more info,I have saw 2 of those before and never off tractor, one was on a tractor that was going through auction lot. I drove the tractor and I think it added a gear between 4 and 5 but since it was around 10 years ago my memory is not the best.
