I have a '57 IH 130. It has been converted to 12 volt. It doesn't seem to want to charge (new battery and alternator). I noticed that the guy who converted it has it set up for negative ground . Is that correct or doesn't it matter? When I do get a slight reading on the ammeter, it reads negative. It started all Summer but in the cold it tries but no go.

Since you ask about the ground. Have you ever put the battery in with + ground, if you did your new alternator is toast. Alternators work only on - ground unless you have a brit alternator which you probably don't have. If you put a battery in with + ground the moment you hook the battery up you fry the alternator diodes.

With the engine running at 1/2 throttle check your battery voltage across the battery terminals using a dc voltmeter. Should be around 13.5-14
volts. If it is charging ok, you may have a battery drain discharging your battery. Hal

Pos/Neg doesnt matter to the starter but it matters to everything in the charging circuit.
You need to take some basic dc readings to see where you are.
