When all else fails...get mad. Went out to the barn with the idea of taking off the whole unit and took a close look and noticed a seam where it connects to the main unit and block. Tapped a bit on it and low and behold...the OTHER half of the pump!!! Got it off to reveal the inner drive gear the shaft, nut and washer. Took it inside and got it apart. Looks like two machined grooves inside the shaft housing and one the farther groove is empty, the inner groove looks like it has a rubber? seal in it. Slight wear on the shaft itself but not too bad where it came in contact with the seal, so just wondering, if a new seal will do it, or a speedy sleeve...and if the sleeve, does the shaft housing need to be bored out??? Damn...what a trip..but you guys have really come through and my stubborness has helped a bit.

Been my experience with a few of them without the speedy sleeve the new seal wont stop the oil from going to the crankcase. Be sure to bend the washer that holds the gear on the pump as it keeps the gear from coming loose and ruining the gear and maybe the shaft. The washer needs to have part of it bent to stop the nut from coming loose.

Thanks again, Hugh. I had bats circling in my head trying to figure this "simple" one out. By the way, in reference to your earlier post below, I notice the touch control in my SC getting jerky this week. I checked it today and added about a quart of fluid, it has a minor leak from the cylinders, first time I've had to add fluid in three years. I think I'll just watch it and add fluid from time to time before the unit rebuild takes place!

Yes...he is the one who nailed the problem right on the head...but you guys needed a brain teaser didn't you? Better than some of the old mundane questions on this board...like what oil to use or was my tractor painted RED at one time...you know.

If it has an o-ring and you use use a speedy sleeve, the hole in the housing that the shaft goes through has to be enlarged to accept the speedy sleeve. Best to let a machine shop do that. The seal in question is the one nearest to the front of the tractor. I don't remember two grooves, but I have only had one pump apart.

Well I have to say after beating this horse to death I'll be the unelected expert on this hydro pump...I had no idea there were two detachable halves to this little baby! The tractor was painted recently and the seam was not visable as it was covered up with paint. Hd I known it was a two parter, I would have made you guys's diagnosis a lot easier. It's tough when there are no pics to show you folks. I think that some questions would be a lot easier answered if we took pics with a digital camera and posted them. I'm going out today and buy one!!

Hi Fenton, That's probably a good idea to post some pictures. You'd better get that shovel warmed up. Looks like you'll be needing it soon.

fenton: I had my suspicions, this was the case. I would still recommend you go to CaseIH. For us to judge that groove in shaft, just not practical.

So glad to see your resolved this.

Yes, I was planning to let them look at it. You'll never know how glad we resolved this issue...the Red Head was just about to kill me as I tend to obsess over things until I get them fixed.
