Just got done rebuildng the 340 put every thing new in the engine ! And have just about worn the starter out trying to get it started. I replaced the points checked gap .020 , put in new condensor, new cap, new rotor, new spark plugs gap.023 new wire from switch to coil. and it won't start checked gas ok! checked choke ok! took air cleaner off ok! checked timing 4 times, made new wire for dist- to coil. still won't fire. Gave it either still wont fire, put in second set of plugs still no go! pulled #1 plug cranked engine very little spark, bearly can see it! Could it be the plug wires? Only wired avaible local was a set of Auto Zone life time gray and black fit all that have fiber inners, not copper! Is the wire killing the current flow?? Or is the wire or not carry enough current to make good spark? Stumped!!! Thanks.

Ditto to "old". Trash those automotive suppression type plug wires and find you a set of copper wires.

Pull the coil wire from the distributor cap & hold or place within 1/4" of a good ground. Have someone to try & start the tractor with the ignition switch on. Should get a hot blue spark.
I think the problem is your plug wires & don't forget the coil wire too. Make sure your plug wires are connected in the correct firing order on the distr. cap. If the rotor turns CW in this order:
2-1
4-3
or CCW
1-2
3-4 Hal

First thing I'd do is find a set of copper wire core plug wires. Thses old tractors don't like auto type plug wires. Then after that if that doesn't work a new cap and rotor you cap maybe cracked and shorting out.

Besides the solid copper wire primary wires, replace the coil. It sounds like you"re not getting a strong enough spark from the secondary windings of the coil.
