Hugh, How have you been ? I have been busy with youth sports but I do have a question for you and the boys. I recently had to look at a H that had stopped running out of the clear blue. I took off the distributor cap and turned it over and had no rotor movement which spelled problems.. It ended up being that the early live pump that was mounted on the backside of the distributor had locked up ,in turn busting the distributor drive and then breaking the cam shaft gear ,along with bending the teeth on the crankshaft drive gear. Wow that was a mouth full. Do you remember those early live pumps? This is the only one I have seen and it used the IH distributor but with a different drive gear.

Hope you had a good Thanksgiving, Tim K. Farmalls Forever

Those hyd pumps off of a W4 can be put on early H's as long as you change the front cover and spacer plate behind the cover, the bolt pattern spacing is diffrent, not to shure if the # of teeth on the drive is the same, haven't got that far into it yet, still rounding up parts to put live hyd on my 48 H.

Tim: I'm a poor one to ask on that particular setup. My letter series Farmalls had belly pumps, thus the only tractor I ever had with that pump and distributor was the Farmall 300. I replaced that pump once in the 35 years I had the 300, no problems with the drive for either pump or distributor. It's now been at least 30 years since I had that apart.

My first thoughts when you say the hydraulic pump locked up is someone let the hydraulic system run dry of oil. Many folks think, oh I'm not using the hydraulics so not to worry about the fluid level. Problem is that hydraulic fluid or oil also lubricates the pump. A hydraulic pump without oil is no different than an engine crankcase without oil, somethings going to seize up.

Hi Hugh, You're right about running a hydraulic
pump dry on oil. The pump is history then. Hal

Hugh this H had the distributor mounted in its normal place but vertical and then the shaft went on through and drove the odd hydrualic pump. Maybe somebody else is familiar with one like this. see ya.

What you are describing is aftermarket stuff- the vertical Delco distributer was aftermarket, although often sold and installed by IH dealers. Delco distributers installed at the factory(which only began on the late Hs in the early 1950s) were horizontals.

Offically no live hydraulic pumps were installed on Hs, in fact it was Stage II Super Hs that first had them installed. The -4 series tractors officially got live hydraulics in 1951 (at least the 6s and 9s did). Some O-4 tractors got pumps as early as 1948.

There were several kits to mount live hydralucs on Hs. I don't know that IH did a kit off the top of my head, but certainly M&W did, Heisler may have, probably others as well.

Dang, Guy, I was thinking yesterday that you must be dead. Haven't heard from you on this board for awhile. Anyway, glad to see you are still kicking and Happy Thanksgiving to you!
