When I converted my SMTA from generator to alternator I just turned the bracket upside down. Used A Delco 3 wire alternator and it fits, had to use shorter belt and believe I drilled out the hole in bracket from 5/16 to 3/8. Alternator is flipped up, tried it both ways but down didn"t work. Not a lot of adjustment on belt. Think I also drilled and tapped larger area on top of thermostat housing for 5?16 bolt and ran adjuster from there.

I put a GM alt on my M with no clearance problems .It was a internal reg unit I took to our auto electric guy he did the one wire conv. for $22.00. Had to use a new belt wish I wouldof keeped the #.Hooked it up to the wire that goes to the amp gage and it has woker fine for two years now. It sometimes sets for 4 months and has never went dead. Good luck Dennis

if i push alt. all the way as tigh t as possible, it is still too big. i thought of flipping it down instead of up but i would have to cut bracket and didnt want to. it didnt look like that would work either though. how do i get alt. close enough to engine so hood will fit.

I made my bracket....its off the tractor now,if you want I can make a drawing and mail it to you....You might want to change to a 1" or 3/4" pully they charge at lower RPM ....Don

I made the same mod to my Super M last summer and I made up a bracket that holds it pretty close to the engine and the hood doesn't hit it, maybe an inch clearance. Would like to do it to my Cub but I don't think that's possible without making a cutout and that's out of the question. I don't think there are any smaller 1 wire alternators out there. (yet)

If you decide to go that route, I have a Japanese alternator still in the NAPA box, that I don't need.

Had the same type of problem on a 450. We ended up useing an alternator off a 1986 toyota pickup on it and it fit real nice.

I have no idea any more what it was brand wise that is. I just know it was small enough to fit real well and worked good also. Biggest problem we had was figureing out how to wire it up correctly. But that wasn't really that hard either we took it in to have it checked and I made sure I took a look at the wireing diagam for the hook up on the tester and just hooked it up the same way.

The Hitachi model fits great! You can flip the mounting bracket and use the existing generator belt.
