We're in the process of getting an old hough loader running [or trying anyway] that has a D-282 IH engine. It's my father in laws loader and for as long as he's had it it has blown black smoke out the exhaust and seems to lack power. We're thinking the injection pump needs rebuilding.Has anyone seen this problem in a D-282 before?

Hi Dale,

You really need to get the IH D282 engine manual as there's many adjustments that need to be made before condeming parts. YtMag sells a copy of the orginal engine manual that's well worth the cost. Click on tractor manual at the top left of this page.

This could be caused anywhere from a pluged intake/exhaust to suction air leak(s) to injector(s) leaking to the injection pump out of adjustment.

There's just too many items to adjust and list here.

Dale,

Those 282s will smoke black like crazy under a hard pull and weren't the most powerful engine anyway. Also, their foggin' dark grey smoke was the first indicator that it needed pump work.

So, a pump and a set of injectors sure could't hurt it a bit.

I'm not sure if this engine has it, but Detroit diesel's had an emergency shutdown. This shuts off all the intake air. The engine would smoke like heck, but wouldn't start. There was a reset on the roots blower that had to be reset manually.

Cummins used an overspeed cutoff that was driven from the tach drive. If the engine speed exceeded the cutoff setting speed it would shutdown the engine. The overspeed cutoff had a
reset button so the engine could be restarted. Hal
