Hi
What is the best way to remove the rear axle? I have to slide it out far enough to get the gear off. Do you have to slide the outside axle bearing out? Is it best to take the wheel off so there"s not so much weight on the end of the shaft.

Ed you are welcome. It is just not a big deal. After a person does one or two in the field with a picker on he gets the idea real fast. If you don't have help you will need to block the bull gear up a little. Just be carefull and don't get hurt.

There are manuals still available for these tractors. They have step by step instructions for most repairs and illustrations that show how things go together. An IT (brand) manual will get the job done. Reprints of the IH service manuals on availble on this website or at binder books. The parts books show every part on the tractor. If you are going to keep the tractor and use it, an Operators manual will help with routine maintenence.

Here's another procedural outline with feedback on the same task:

Ed,
I had to do the same thing when I needed to replace the axle housing gaskets on my 46 H. Click on the link below to see the procedure I used. HTH Larry

First you will have to remove the bolt that holds the bull gear on the axle. This can be done by removing the PTO and then reaching through the hole. Next you should remove the wheel. If you have a hoist you can leave the hub attached, otherwise you should remove it too. Then unbolt the rear axle carrier cap, and then the axle will slide right out.
