I need to bring my M home from my woodlot for the winter. Rather than trailering, I was thinking I'd fuel it up and drive it home since the weather is supposed to be nice this weekend. It would be about a 20 mile ride. How far do some you drive your tractors in one shot?

I think if I were to do it and there wasn't a back way on little used road's I'd take a escort car to stay with you . My M doesn't have blinking light's , so on a busy paved road I want a car with flasher's flashing behind me . I live in North east Iowa farm country and even around here they'll slam on the brakes because they didn't see the big tractor . I'm going on a 8 mile tractor ride today before we eat to get my tractor to the shop where I work so I can work on it tomorrow . Temp - 18 degrees now , tomorrow - lower , around 8 degrees , I'll take today ! Take care and have fun ! ...Randy

I drove a H about 12 miles to a garage to get a overhaul, only took a few minutes. The owner told me as fast as it was he didnt think it needed overhauling.the next week i took a 1937 JD to the same place not relizing it only ran 31/2 MPH,It rained, snowed, wind blew, and got dark, and i just about froze

This starts a little off the subject but will get back to it.

A township near me bought a motor grader about 90 miles away. The supervisors debated on how to get it home. As they were deliberating, a seasoned snow plow operator spoke up, drive it! Tee supervisors all looked at him with a shocked look until he said, “you guys will put that many miles on in one day plowing snow!” Needless to say, they drove it home.

Bottom line is if you put in a 10 hour day on an M at 4 miles per hour working in the field you cover 40 miles. Twenty miles in road gear is a piece of cake!

Personally, I think about 35 miles (70 round trip) is as far as I have driven one and that was a 1486 hauling grain to town.

I bought my first M this year and didn't have a trailer. The M had been sitting for a year or two and just started to make sure it was running. I drove it 60 miles on hot and windy Nebraska day. I loved it.

Enjoy the ride-

Perfect distance for a ride on an M on a decent day. Put her in 5th gear and go! I grew up on an M so I'm obviously very biased.

Twenty miles on an M would be a pice of cake. My Dad bought a 330U once at a farm sale, I drove it about 35 miles with loader and 3 disc plow on it. I found out after about 5 miles the brakes were crap. I used to go to my uncles 8 miles to bale hay for him, 460D first then 756D, just about 1/2 hr.

The tractor ride goes around 75mi per day for two days then shorter on the third ending up around 175 total so enjoy.

Go for it . The Amish run their farm machinery on the highways & get away with it . Just make sure you have one of those SMV signs on the back . Be safe but have fun because you only live once . Take pics & then you'll have something to talk to the Grandkids about later-on . Ken

I used to drive my "H" 72 miles to a friend"s place about twice a year when I wanted to take part in a Club plowing day. Was 5 hours driving time. Drove there on Friday and came home on Monday. Kept to the back roads most of the time but had to travel on a busy section part way where the big rigs were a bit scary at times. Nice way to travel when it was fine but could be cold in windy weather. Haven"t got the "H" any more but will be trying out my Super C on the same trip in the not too distant future I hope.

My buddies still laugh about one of our own who drove a big green tractor he bought at auction about 130 miles from home on I-65 in the rain. Always too cheap to have something hauled.

Dan

Take the back roads....go slow and easy ,hard surface roads wear tractor tires at high speed....sit back and relax.....you will enjoy yourself.....

In 1954, my dad bought a Super H from the local International dealer in southern So Dak. The only Super H in the area was down in Nebraska at another dealer. My dad drove the new Super H home over 60 miles. I think there is some optimum distance that it is faster to just drive the tractor rather than putting it on a trailer. I know that it takes me at least 30 to 45 minutes to hook on to the trailer, load the tractor, chain it down, and then unchain and unload at the other end. Plus, you still have to drive the distance which takes time. I mow some land for our church that is 10 miles away and I can make it there much faster by just driving as it only takes 20 minutes to drive with the tractor and it takes longer than that to hook up the trailer and load the tractor. The only down side of driving the tractor is safety, driving with the maniac drivers on the road who don't think you should be on the road. Roger

On an M? That"s nothing. Try driving one of those new combines that far. I drove a JD 9750 combine with duals about 20 miles across busy roads once, don"t ever care to do it again. Most I"ve ever done on a tractor is 32, tends to get boring, but no big deal.

If it was mine it would take abit less than an hour, mine will go 25 mph, if yours is cranked up it would go like a scared cat too. your probably lookin at a hour and a bit.

I had the pleasure this summer of making some long distance journeys in some farm equipment. I bought a 1570 Case about 50 miles from my farm and at the time my rig was broke down and i needed the tractor for planting. i ended up taking the long haul in it and it really didn't seem to hurt anything. i also bought a 1460 international combine about 40 miles from my farm and drove that home too.

My Dad moved his repair business from a "small town" to the "big city" back in the 60's, a distance of about 40 some miles. He had many faithful old customers that drove their tractors 40 - 60 miles to have work done. Nobody thought of using a trailer. If you had a tractor that wasn't running...you towed it.

I know a guy who drove a John Deere R home 45 miles. It was in late October and other than being chilled to the bone was no problem.

Dan, you will be surprised how quickly an M will cover that distance. I do some custom work for a friend 12 miles from the farm and its 18 to my favourite machine shop. Tractors make those trips regularly. My neighbour was telling me that when his Dad bought his first M in 1939 they had to pick it up in London Ontario and drive it home to the farm, about 40 miles..an easy afternoon drive for an M !-..... .Mike in Exeter Ontario

I have a friend that drove a Massey Harris 55 from Colorado to Lawton OK after wheat harvest because they ran out of truck and trailer room. They switched drivers and drove day and night to keep up with the other vehicles.

20 miles with a M? No sweat! My M goes about 17MPH so just over an hour. I once drove a JD 4320 we got at an auction about 150 miles when I was about 14. After my dad figured fuel and tire wear we was still plenty ahead of hauling cost.

A few years ago I bought a 150hp tractor and drove 125 miles home, not because I didn`t have a way to haul it. Just thought might help me find out if it was what it was supposed to be.
I still have it. Is a good tractor.

My uncles drove a Farmall M and a pull type combine from Eastern South Dakota to Western Wisconsin. One drove the tractor and the other rode in the grain hopper.

I've drove a good number of tractors 10-20 miles. Some where just to big for the trailor and other times I didn't have a trailor. Always good to have a car/truck follow you just in case of trouble and the help idoits off your tail.

Dan,

I knew a feller one time that drove an MT John Deere 457 miles across the state of Nebraska.

They didn't have trailers back then like we do now and he didn't own a truck, as I recall.

Hay rides we took kids on (and went on when we were kids were 15-35 miles. The best part was dowm hill with an M making fire in the stack and Pow Pow Bam

Our farm was divided by I-94 in the late 60s. The net result was a 5 mile ride to the other fields. Luckily there are family residences on both ends.

Happy turkey day JimN
