I know the best way to fix a leaking radiator is to take it off and repair or replace. Just wondering if anyone has "been there done that" and actually had a leaking radiator stop leaking by using a sealer like Bars or Irontite or ? with antifreeze in the system. Anyone had any luck with radiator sealers?

I have had no problems using Bars stop leak with pellets. Bought it at Wal-Mart. Worked great on three radiators.

I just read that the ACDelco Seal Tabs are made up of about 5 spices like cumin, tumeric, etc.

AC Delco's tablets are made by Bars Leaks, and they sell them for just over $1.00.Thats about 1/5 what the GM dealers get.

Worked for me using two bottles of stuff from a Shell station, until I busted a seam. Guess those other leaks were necessary. Finally took it to a rad shop and they fixed the unit, but told me it was on its last breath.

However, plowed 70 acres with it and no leaks yet.

Had a heater core start leaking at 70,000 miles on my 3/4 ton Bowtie.

It has 205,000 miles on it now and the Silver Seal still in it.

This will sound crazy, but here goes…

Put in two or three tablespoons of ground black pepper (yes the stuff you or your wife uses for cooking) in the radiator.

Now, before you all die of laughter, first it’s cheap (only pennies to try) second, it won’t harm a thing. Third it will work (believe it or not), and fourth it will clean back out of the radiator and engine the next time it is in the cooker. Besides, it gives the radiator a smell just like home made soup!

Oh, by the way, my local radiator man (has to turn work away cause he is too busy) recommends this himself to people especially during harvest season on combines to get them though the season.

Go ahead and laugh…but when you try it, I’ll have the last laugh! :>)

Does it make any difference if you use coarse grind, regular grind, or fine grind? I am thinking of putting a can in all me vehicles.

Thanks,

Ron

captain: No I wont laugh, I have used this many times. What's more it will fix a far larger hole than one could even imagine.

First time I ever saw it used was in 1972, new 50 series Chevy truck was truning on new crushed gravel and somehow a stone flipped from a front wheel and put a hole in rad. The stream was size of a lead pencil. A good soul on sight jumped in his car went to corner store and back with one of those cylinder containers size of a small soup can of pepper. He dumped the whole container in rad and started adding water. Everyone laughed, including the owner of the truck. (my dad) Within 5 min. the leak had stopped. My dad operated that truck for 6 years in which he put a 100,000 miles on it with that pepper patch.

I've used this numerous times myself, have seen others use it. More often than not it became a permanent fix. Your right it does not plug up heater or rad cores.

I work for a company that makes a radiator sealer that is one of the best on the market. The main ingredent is soy meal which I grind very fine threw a new-holland 355 feed grinder. We also sell the soy meal to barsleak to make there pellets. The other ingreadent in barsleak is soluble oil which lubracats your water pump. (Cant tell you no more Or I'll have to kill you)hehe.

Don't worry we don't need your product, or it's price tag. Pepper is working just fine, has been since 1972, and for me that's 33 years of proof.

I like the aluminum powder. If that don't fix it the next best thing is to buy new. for many tractors you can buy a new radiator cheaper than you can have one worked on.

If the leak is not on a flexible or joint/seam, and if the leak is a weep rather than a 1/16" hole, I have had silverseal, and barrs Leak both do the temporary job. In most cases the leak was a symptom of greater rotten areas, cracks, or gasket deterioration.

I have never tried the pepper but..Many years ago I was bringing a newly purchased 1928 Essex (thermosyphon system) home over some pretty rough roads and split the bottom tank. We dumped in about 1/2 pound of oatmeal and it held until we got home about 150 miles later.
