I got a deal on a 1586 that only has 2400 orginal hours and is in good mechanical shape. The problem is that it has sat outside most of its life and the cab is severely rusted. The roof is rusted into holes and is also all rusted out around the eves. The trim panels are also in bad shape. Has anyone run into this problem before? What parts are available and what do you think the best route would be, a whole cab from a salvage yard or buying all the trim peices and a new roof and peicing it together? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My 1486 rusted out under the silly black vinyl stripe that they put on them. A good body man fiberglassed it and put spray on pickup bedliner on it. Still looks great after several years.

Just for what it's worth, and this might be a stretch for some purists, but if all you're looking for is a cab that doesn't leak so you can use it, and ya don't care too much what it looks like up close- find someone in your area who does fiberglass work- someone who repairs or builds fiberglass boats for example. Have them cover it with a layer of fiberglass, paint it if ya want, and you'll be good to go.

I have a friend who does this work and I've seen him fiberglass rusted-out gas tanks in old cars. Once it dries he sprays them with some of that rubberized undercoating spray- they look and work great and never leak.

IH offers a fully trimmed roof package (1262416C92...~ $ 2100) that would be the best part to buy for this. This roof is painted red and includes the trim and seals needed to install it.

Getting a used roof will probably rust out fast, or already be rusting out. You will not be saving $$$ by going used.

If you need a new roof, ring me at 1-866-FARMALL.

I agree with cowman. The salvage yards probably won't want to tear up a complete one. Still if you can find the parts used, I would go for it. Sounds like you are maybe more looking to add the tractor to a collection. Even if you arent, and want to use it, have someone put a coat of paint on it and it should be just as good as a new one.
