I have a neighbor that has an M with a 12 volt conversion. He was using the old baling wire trick in place of a battery box when the baling wire shorted across both terminals of the battery and got extremely hot. He got the cables off before anything caught fire or the battery blew up. Now when he tries to hook the battery up the wiring going to the starter button and the lightswtich/fusebox gets hot right away. Any ideas where to start on this? Perhaps the battery is junk now? Wiring melted inside of switch box? Looking for thoughts and ideas. Thanks.

My guess would be the alternator if it has one wires are burned/shorted and maybe a few others also. I start with one wire at a time and rewire the whole thing.

I agree with Old,
I would ask you to see if the diodes in the alternator have been toasted. Disconnect the big wire from the alternator, and see if things still get hot.

If they don't, they are toast.
