How prone is an H block to Freeze cracks??

I made 2 mistakes with a recently acquired H. First, I temporarily had water in it after doing some work on it. I didn't get a chance to put antifreeze in so when the weatherman predicted a 20-25 deg overnight temps, I drained the water out from the Radiator drain, not realizing that there is a plug on the block too. I pulled the plug today and it still had water in it so if it did crack, it didn't all drain into the crankcase. Any thoughts? Hope I didn't wreck the block!!

Back in mid fortys Dad had just bought new H and back then we ran straight water and drained in cold weather. One November day we ran all day in short sleeve weather and put tractor up without draining. Next morning temperature was in low teens (did not have up to date weather forecasts back then) and tractor was frozen solid. Pulled in heated garage and thawed it out and only damage was leaking gasket on side plate.

Have learned from years of experience with RVs that if temperature is warm during day (60 or better) you will have no damage if temperature drops well below freezing at night. if temperature hovers around freezing during day and drops well below freezing at night there is good chance of damage.

DJT: John is probably correct, while the block didn't completely drain, enough would come out to relieve presure at those relatively moderate temperatures. I wouldn't want to try it at 0 or below. As Hal said try pure water first to be sure.

Today the weather was in the upper 40's so I put the plugs back in and filled it with water. It didnt loose any water after a few hours, plus I ran it for awhile so it looks like it will be OK. I did notice the water I drained out was a bit oily. Maybe it's just some oil residu thats leaked in over the years?

The oil could just be from somone overgreasing the water pump bearing. It could get a bit of oil in the coolant.

I wouldnt worry about it. You probably got enough out to make up the room expanded ice would need to break a block.

If it warms up in your area I would fill with water and check for leaks. If there's no leaks
drain & fill with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. Good Luck, Hal
