I have a 300u and put a snow thrower behind it. I tried it yesterday in snow that was quite wet. When the snow built up and it got hard to turn the PTO Shaft, the shaft slowed way down and stopped. If I pulled up on the PTO Operating lever, it would start the PTO shaft turning again and pull the engine down.
I have read my IT manual a couple times and I can not spot any answere there. Can anyone tell me why the PTO Shaft is slowing down and stopping when the going gets tough, and what I need to do to fix it?
Thanks in advance for reading and any help I may get.

I followed your suggestions today. The operating lever does have 2 good notches in it, one to lock the pto in gear and one to lock it out, but there is some wear (play) when locked in one position or the other. It is this play that when taken out seems to lock the pto in. I adjusted the bands it as the IT manual describes, except we could only find the punch mark on the pawl, could not find it on the quadrant. So we adjusted the bands with the operating lever in the midpoint. Without a load it seems to work fine, but I will have to wait for snow again to see if it holds.
I am thinking that if the pto slips again under load, I will turn the adjusting screws in about another 1/2 turn and try that. Does that sound right?
Thank you for all the help.

Spunds like the latch on the on side is broken or your not locking it in to the run poshsion ya just dont pull it up and let it flop around they have to lock in the notch and if there is no notch then ya either need to make one or get a new latch plate,

I-T manual paragrafh 208 tells you how to adjust the bands on that PTO. If its IH 10 that is

I read that part, then read past that part, as I thought that adjustment was just for stoping the shaft from turning, guess I am wrong as usual.
I certainly will trust this advise, but need a little more help. 1. The IT manual says "remove the adjusting screw cover". Mine doesn't have any covers over these screws, I will assume there never were any or they are gone, okay?
2. Then the manual says "Hold the operating lever so that punch marked dot on pawl is aligned with the punch dot on quadrant as shown at (X). Is the "pawl" the thing that the thumb release on the operating lever engages and disengages in the cogs, and are the cogs the "quadrant? If so, there should be punch marks on both of them, right?
3. Lastly, there are two adjustment screws, a front and back. The manual seems to refer to them both as singular and plural, and I assume I adjust both the same way, is this right?
To respond, simply show my question #,"1","2", or "3" and your response.
Thanks for the help. I have the common tools and the willingness, I'm just not too bright!

#1 yep there should be a cover it sort of looks like an upside down U that is about 1 inch long and closed on the ends.
#2 Those marks are almost not there and very hard to see if you can even find them. But they should be right at the middle of the throw of the PTO lever. #3 The book explains how to adjust and even then its a little tricky and you may have to do it a couple times. Only reason I even know about this is because a friend has a 300U that I fixed up for him. If you look in the tractor photos and look for 300U farmall you should be able to see a picture of it and the brush gaurd I made for it.

It sounds like it just needs the bands adjusted. Your I&T manual should show ya how to make these. Hope this is helpful
