Hi All ! First of all , I've got a carb icing problem , does anyone else ? What do I do about it ? Get a bigger carb to slow the air flow ? Just kiddin ' ;')> No , Really , what can be done about it ? Next on the agenda are my axles again . Are the bearing's in the housing or in the end cap with the seal's ? I still haven't gotten a service manual and couldn't get to the dealer in time this morning to get one ordered . I have a printout of the axle setup but it's not very clear as to what goes where . Are the seal's as easy as it look's to replace them aside from removing the wheel's ? Thanks again ! ...Randy

PS:
I was checking out ebay and noticed a few belt pulley's for sale most listing a number of different tractor's that they will fit including the M's . Most of them are 7-1/2" to 9-1/2" in diameter . My manual list's 2 size pulley's for the M , a 11"D x 7-1/2"W that was supplied with the drive and provided a belt speed of 2588 fpm and an optional 13"D x 8-1/2"W with a speed of 3058 fpm . So my question is - are these pulley's aftermarket or just off a specific tractor that has been forgotten the more the pulley get's passed around . Is there some way to ID which tractor it came from originally with casting #'s or whatever ?

Carb icing is as old as carbs. Havent you heard an old pilot talk about carb icing. Yes your four barrel carb will ice up to you just dont take the aircleaner off everytime you drive it to see it. When temp and moisture in the air are so it just happens even in the summer. ANY carb can ice up but the engine can run just fine.

I think all up draft carbs will frost just above the carb.Temperature and humidity control it. My old M frosts up, really bad especially when the choke isnt pushed in all the way, The frosting is similiar to freon, When a fluid changes from a liquid to a gas it gives up it's heat. thats how AC cools. Randy where in Iowa do you live, I am 25 NW of DesMoines.

Hey , I live near Waverly in NE Iowa . It's not a bad problem , the icing , I just haven't delt much with updraft carb's ( or any older one barrel carb's for that matter ) in many , many year's so I forgot just how they work . I work with 4-barrel carb's very often but they don't ice up very much given their application . I didn't remember my Air Force training in A/C and ventilation about the expansion of gasses :-| and the effect's of a venturie . Thanks for the reminder ! I won't worry about it then . Besides I've got enough to do on this thing to get it right . If it get's bad enough to stop the engine then I'll go inside and warm up ! Take care ...Randy

Carb iceing is just part of life and normal on engines with carbs. Best way to fix is make sure you warm it up before you work it much. After warm it should stop iceing

Hi Old , What do you mean , work it ? It's got nothing to do except wait around to put me to work ! With no 3-point there's no snow plowing going on and cutting hay is out for now , so that doesn't leave much for it to do except keep me out of trouble ...and busy fixing it :") . Though I did drag that 30 foot spike around for about 1/2 hour some time ago and it worked well except for the trany noises and the gear oil pouring out of the axle end gasket's . Do you know anything about that part of the tractor ? Take care ...Randy

Well then if you aren't working and just takeing joy rides with it just let it run 10-15 minutes before you drive it that should be long enough the heat the intake up and stop the iceing.

The only way I know of preventing Iceing is to run warm air into the intake. If a temporary fix needs to be tried, make up a piece of 6" stove pipe 16" long with a cap on one end. Put two holes in it. one in the side about 3" down, and one in the cap.

Use use spiral wound intake heater duct (from NAPA or others) that fits over your air intake (remove the precleaner).

The top hole fits the top pipe of the muffler, the side hole fits the intake heat pipe.

This is moderately ugly, but is only needed in the winter/fall. Plumbing this into the pipe below the hood, and making a manifold shield/stove, would be very slick. A butterfly valve would control flow for summer.
Best info I have.

Hi , I don't think it's that bad ! I don't have any use for it in the winter right now except to work on it . I understand theat a company called Saginaw sell's add on 3-point hitch's for a reasonable price . If I can get one of those then this will be one handy little tractor around here ! But I still need to fix the gear oil leak in the rear axles and get it full of oil to see if that makes the trany any quieter . If not then I'll have to take the thing apart and fix it . Might as well put some money into it because they aren't being made anymore . Take care ...Randy
