Ok guys, Please pull out your books and figure out what the "X" code means please. This guy is selling a Super M with a serial # L-509-xxxJ. I know it"s a 1953, I just don"t know what the other is. Thanks for all your help.

You don't show any X codes, the J means the clutch was built by Rockford, that L prefix means the tractor was built in Louisville, Kentucky. I assume the xxx are digits that you have not listed, as Louisville Super M's had 6 digit serial numbers. In case the last digit is followed by an X and some number, or an X, then a number, then a letter, you need to let us know what they are.

Probably, but there are about 25 X codes that don't have a 1 in them.

Don't think there was any X codes used on any serial numbers for SM.Thought he could be refering to date codes on tractor which could still be a 53 tractor and have some X or all X on castings if early 53 tractor.Won't know unless
he posts back.

You are probably right, my Super H (don't have a Super M) with gasoline engine does not have X1 after the serial number, never thought about that until now. My 460 does not have an X suffix. Guy Fay says they were used until "sometime in the 50's".
