Bearing went out, all that was left was inter and outter race and a few bearings in the housing. How do you put this all back together.A bolt and washer hold the interrace on the trans main shaft and a snap ring holds the outter race in the out put shaft?

I had the same bearing go out on me while plowing.Started to make a nasty klunking sound. Mine had the bolt on it to hold the roller bearing on the end of the shaft. The race is pressed into the main drive gear shaft. The race is the hardest part to change.I had to have the local bearing dealer cross reference the old pilot bearing #. The bearing # he got me was MU 5205 CL for around 25 Dollars. You also might want to check all the other bearings for any slop as long as you are in there

The top shaft bearing was held in with a bolt and washer untill I think 1946, then they were updated to a snap ring, due to the end of the shafts breaking where they were tapt

I believe the M is different than the H in that the pilot bearing on the M is a ball bearing whereas on the H, it is a roller bearing and has no outer race. The hole in the main drive gear serves as the outer race on the H. I've not had an M transmission apart, but from the parts book, it looks like there is a snap ring to retain the bearing in the hole in the main drive gear. If so, that snap ring will have to come out before you can get main drive assembly out. Looks to me getting that snap ring out or back in won't be easy as there is not much space to work. To get it back together, the main drive gear assembly with the bearing holder and all will have to come out the front of the transmission housing. It's held in there with 6 bolts I believe.

Im trying to remember this so bear with me. The needle bearing on the main shaft is held on with the bolt and washer, this bearing rides inside the constant mesh gear.(I called it that, but there is a technical term for it, maybe main drive gear. This gear drives the bottom shaft)There is another bearing in the housing for the constant mesh gear that that shaft rides on which is the one the snap ring holds in place with the snap ring. The drive side of the coupler goes on the end with a bolt and washer as well.Ill assume you have the constant mesh gear out, so I would go aheaad and replce the bearing and seal while you have the pump dropped.

You need a shop manual that covers the M transmission in detail. Your local Case/IH dealer may still have the shop manual that covers the M transmission and would probably zerox you a copy. Post a picture of what you have and someone on the forum can probably help. I'm sure some of them have had that transmission apart. Hal
