If you have a 140 with the vertical pattern 04-06 grille and it fits into pegs on the grille pan at the bottom, you have the correct grille for that style grille housing. The early style (horizontal) grille will not bolt up to this later version grille housing. The early style 140 grille hinges on pegs at the bottom attached to the inside of the radiator side panels welded to the grille housing asssembly. Both grilles do however attach to the grille housing about 3/4 the way up with a "speedie" fastener or bolts.

I believe I read somewhere the actual change took place on the 140 grill for 1964. Either way, Hugh is basically correct.
Personally, I always liked the newer vertical style better of the two types. But, that is simply a matter of personal taste. No other reason.

mike: Just look for the date of 04-06 introduction. I have a mid 63 140 and it has vertical grill. I don't have the serial numbers here right now but I know the change occured just a few hundred before my tractor. I know this as I questioned the grill when buying this tractor. We checked it out and vertical was proper.

clarence: Both are correct for specific years. Someone must have changed the grill in your tractor. Starting in 1958 the grill bars ran horizontal. With the introduction of 04-06 tractors early in 1963 the 140 grill was changed to vertical bar lines matching the larger tractors. Even when the big tractors changed again in 67-68 the 140 retained the vertical 04-06 grill.

I really wouldn't bother to make your tractor correct if I were you. I never had a 140 with the horizontal bar grill, however on the larger tractors such as 460-560 the grill never would stay tight. Always had a rattle or vibration, or worse still falling off and you would run over it, then after that it just got worse.
