now have the 140 charging thru the little light. the ? is i have to rev the engine quite hard to start it charging . i dont know what bulb it is it is a little push through the dash type with no number on it would a different light make it charge at a lower rpm or am i going to have to live with it? after the third alternator from the junkzone (autozone, yea i knew better but i went there anyway) its charging at 14.5 volts. might be better off using the diode i dont know you guys tell me

When I converted my Farmall H to 12 volts using a Hitachi 14231 alternator I used a 10 ohm - 10 watt resistor from Radio Shack in lieu of the light. I couldn't find a suitable light and socket locally so went the resistor route. It starts charging with starting throttle setting instantly. Only problem I have it that I need to install a diode in series with the resistor so it will shut down at something other then the slowest idle. Hope this helps. Hal

That's pretty much normal for the alternator you are using. I've tried to solve it using different size indicator lamps, diodes, etc. But the only solution I've found that works is to spin the alternator faster - i.e. install the smallest pulley you can find on the alternator.

Keep in mind there is absolutely NO danger of spinning the alternator TOO fast on your tractor! Fully wound up your tractor's engine is turning only a little faster than "fast idle" RPM's for the vehicles the alternator was originally designed for...

Most of Dad's alternator-equipped tractors are like that, including the ones that came from the factory with alternators ('56 and '66 series). Even the self-exciting (remember this is a PG rated forum, folks) single-wire alternator on the M is a little finicky; takes a quick blip of throttle to get it to start charging. I did the Hitachi conversion with idiot light on my H. Same thing.

It's been a matter of standard operating procedure to give the tractor a quick rev shortly after startup to get the alternator charging for 20-odd years for me... Guess I'm just used to it.

If the lamp you are using is of very low wattage, that COULD affect the speed at which the alternator "excites" somewhat. A #194 bulb is the "standard" for this use. You could try hooking one in the circuit with test leads to see if that would help any.

Also, you need a SMALL pulley on the alternator, to get the unit's speed up as much as possible. An automotive electrical shop should have a slection of various pulleys that will match the width of the belt.

Hello,
On my case I just have a wire going back near the operator (me) and I touch it to the amp meter even at idle and it will start charging so bulb type may make a difference. I don't leave it connected while operating. Mark
