oliver 55 question

They guys over on the Oliver board don't seem to know anything about this, so I thought I'd try over here....

Our neighbor Marty just picked up what looks like an Oliver 55 that has been converted to a forklift by KD Somethingoranother out of Texas. It steers like a pig. He just about put it in the ditch turning out of the driveway. He has a parts book, but it does not list the tires or even the size of the wheel.

Do they all steer like that ?

Does anyone know what size what size steering tires would have come on it ? How about what size tires came of the front of an Oliver 55 or 55 Utility (if there was such a thing)?

Thanks

Greg

My 55 has 6 X 16 6plys on the front. It steers hard if you're trying to get around in tight spot. It's not too bad if you're moving. Factory Oliver steering set-up are and expensive. The guy who makes PS add ons for Fords is working on a kit for Olivers.
Sorry I didn't answer your question on the other board I'm certainly no expert and I figured some one else who knew better would answer.

So, let me guess. The forklift is mounted on the rear, and the operators station has been reversed so that you actually drive the tractor backwards, meaning that the rear wheels now do the steering. The first thing is to educate yourself on how to drive this thing, it will be quite different. Also, check out the entire steering system, you may have worn parts which are contributing to the problem. I really have no idea about the size of the tires, because that part of the tractor was probably modified during the changeover also. I am guessing that there should also be some heavy counter weights on the steering end, if those are missing, there will not be enough weight on the steering tires, and you will have trouble.

I spent seat time on a 55ute 35 years ago. It steered well but was not loaded for fork operation. Geometry of steering for a reversed unit is often neglected completely. The conversion company ignores the problem of king pin inclination (kpi) and caster designed for going forward, being totally wrong for going backwards (especially fast).
Resetting the caster to near zero, and the kpi to be in the center of the tire. (an alignment person can do this if they are willing to be bold.
power steering is a valued item on this setup, but I don't know if there was a factory option.

Tire size ?? I would use a non-ribbed industrial truck tire of the correct rim diameter 8ply rated. Narrow if on the pavement, or hard packed gravel (150-185 series) if on softer ground I'd go with (205-235) THat is my 7.56 cents worth.

It looks to me like the caster is off. The whole tractor looks likle it is tipped back a little. If it had bigger tires on the rear, it would bring the caster back some.

It is a reversed station conversion. There is a cast iron counter weight that is 3 feet high, 2 feet wide and at least a foot thick. It even has "oliver" cast into it. The forklift handles 2000 lb. skids of potting soil with ease.
