First off, does your tractor have glow plugs? If so you don,t have a 310 german engine, you have a D282 engine which has a roosamaster pump. Yes the seals on the injection pump drive shaft are probly leaking. If you put a pump on this tractor before you should have changed the two seal on the drive shaft then.they are kinda hard to get started inside the pump when reinstalling the pump but can be done with out any special tools. Good luck & hope thing go well

Hi Stu, probably as tractor vet says, front seal on Bosh injection pump. Seal is about $8.00 and not very difficult to do, just mark position of pump on the engine mount, do not loosen the 3 cap screws on the pump drive gear, just the big nut on the pump drive shaft. Use a seal remover to remove old seal and becareful not to scratch the drive shaft. Put lots of seal lubricant on drive shaft and new seal. Make sure new seal is aligned properly and use a deep socket to fit over drive shaft and onto outside of metal holder on seal and gently tap it into place.

I have replaced 2 seals on my brothers 454 with German D179 and Bosch pump. The reason these seals are failing more frequently now is the newer Diesel fuels have less lubrication in them then when these injections pumps were designed 40 years ago. Solution is to add a little Diesel fuel conditioner or a tablespoon of motor oil to the tractor's fuel tank everytime you fill it up.

Good luck

I started it up to move to shop. No oil came from vent but I did not run the rpm's up. It has a roosa- master pump on it I put it on used 7-8 yrs ago so I may have it rebilt how hard is the seal to replace on this pump? Thanks Stu

How hard is it to adapt the RM pump to the german engine? The german bosch pumps are getting very costlly to rebuild if parts can be found at all. What was the pump off of?

Hi Stu, I don't know anything about roosa-master injection pumps. Only worked on Bosh & CAV.
