1952? Cub Questions

Looking into buying a Cub and have a question or two. Other than checking for the normal water in oil type stuff, is there any particular defect/problem area that I should pay attention to? The tractor runs very well, looks good and has a good set of implements in good condition. The only things noticeable are a little play in the steering, wants to run a few minutes then shut off like it is out of gas but restarts with a minimal amount of hesitation (probably dirty carb and/or fuel system) and I notice as it is running after it has warmed up smoke comes out around the oil filler/dipstick area. I don't expect a flawless tractor, but one that offers good potential without a major investment on repairs. I am comfortable working on it mechanically wise, but if one of the things I mentioned is a tell-tale sign of something to bite me I would like to know.

Of course like any other purchase of used equipment it is still a crap-shoot.

I do not want to be a smart alec but the best thing to look for when considering a Cub is a Super A. Both usually sell for same price and the SA is a much better tractor, I have a Cub and SA not much difference in the overall size

Check the fluids in all places, hyds and tranny. The tranny like to get water in them which isn't a real big deal but will need to be fixed if you do buy it. The smoke from the dipstick is probably caused by blow by which means the rings maybe a little worn

What would the source be for the water in tranny?

If it has ever sat out side in the rain what happens is, rain water runs down the shifter and then in to the tranny. We have a cub that we put all new seals in the tranny last summer and hwne I checked the tranny it was over full and the fluid was milky looking. It had been parked out side since we had done the work to it and as I said it come in from the shifter. Its no big deal but need to be looked at.

Most likely hasn't been sheltered from rain or snow or both. Makes a big difference when stored under a shelter. Those C60 engines aren't sleeved. Hal
