About 100 years ago (it seems), I had a very old Corn Snapper that I was told was built by IH. I used it to pick my ear corn one year then loaned it to a friend where it disappeared. This fine old picker had a wooden elevator, was PTO driven, was a single row and did not have a husking bed. Left the husks on, thus the name snapper. Has anyone ever seen one and are there any for sale anywhere in midwest?

Don't know if I have seen one, but I'll bet there would be at least one to be found somewhere. The fully mounted McCormick #24 picker was also a snapper only unit.

model 24 picker had it's husking rolls past the snapping rolls like a 227 john deere. the 24 could be equipped without the husking rolls to pick sweet corn but i have never seen one.

Rusty: As a matter of fact a combine head is nothing more than a snapper head. I bought a NH 890 forage harvester in 1975, equiped it with a two row snapper head for harvesting ground ear corn. It was too slow and didn't utilize 1066 hp very well.

I considered reversing the travel of my 560, same as you would for a forklift, installing a 4 or 6 row corn with a cross conveyor for loading wagons, then use the 890 as a stationary grinder. When I got the cost all totaled up, decided to buy the combine instead. All you need do is close the concave a bit, up the rpm on cylinder, combine will harvest cob as well. It also harvested a lot of other crops.

Come to think of it, the IH #234 was nothing more than a snapper, the husking bed mounted behind, and could be interchanged with the shelling unit.
