Is my farmall h with the 6 volt battery suppose to have the positive terminial attached to the ground wire. I have it set up this way but when I try to start the tractor the negative battery terminal connector starts to smoke and melt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Both the other guys have it right but both missed one thing. Since its still 6 volt are the battery cables the correct size or are they the type of cable used on a car or truck. If so then that can or is also your problem. Both cables need to be 0 or 00 cables any thing less and your causeing your self problem and also burning out the starter slowly.

Brian, I pretty much agree with the captains good advice. The starter will still turn the same direction n work REGARDLESS if it were hooked Positive OR Negative ground. I think the first thing I would do is remove, clean n wire brush, then re attach that smoking connection cuz it may be loose or burned or corroded. To be safe, you may as well remove, clean n wire brush, then reattach each n every battery n starter n ground cable (and where the ground cable attaches to the tractor frame) while youre at it.

Im thinkin its EITHER a bad connection or the starter itslef may be bad or else its mechanically stuck/jammed. Once you fix the loose connection, see if when you try n crank her the lights would dim badly or the batterys voltage drops drastically, in which case I suspect a bad or a stuck/jammed starter. Loosen it n retighten and/or crank the engine somehow to see if it will free up??? Mabe the starter drives jammed into the flywheel teeth??

If when trying to crank theres no smoke or sizzle and the battery voltage dont drop much and/or lights dont dim much, then I suspect the starter switch may be bad or the starter where it connects to the switch.

You may wanna also check where the ground cable attaches to the tractor for a loose or burned connection and any connection on the switch n starter???

The H originally was 6-Volt Positive Ground; however it may have been changed during its life.

The smoking is coming from a loose battery connection, a heavy load, (possibly the starter has the drive jammed into the flywheel ring gear preventing the starter from turning) or it could also be a starter that has a shorted out armature or field windings. If it is only smoking when you try to run the starter, the starter and related wirings are the place to start.

One thing you need to do thought is polarize the generator to make sure that it is set up for positive ground and check to make sure that the – terminal on the coil (only if you have a distributor) is connected to the switch. The ammeter may read backwards (shows a charge when you turn on the lights with the engine off) if the polarity is not right, but nothing else on a stock H will be affected if the ground was changed from positive to negative.
