IH provided a 1 1/8 inch box wrench with new lettered models in the 1930s and 40s. The wrench is about 9 inches long has a round shaft handle that was ment to put a 3/4 id pipe on it to make a long handle. The pipe did not come with the tractor. My question is where was the wrench attached to tractor and what held it to the tractor. Thanks in advance for any interest in my question.

I bought a wrench like that back in 1980, from the local IH dealer. It was for the wheel clamps on a F-12, and F-20, If I remember right. It's still around here somewhere, but haven't seen it for years.

Mornin' Bill,

Boy, I don't think so.

Those wrenches that used the pipe came out with the large chassis 66 series in 1972. The short 9" 1 1/8" wrench was for the wide front end bolts and wheel lugs; the other larger wrench was for the rear axle clamp bolts. When new, the pipe was strapped to the left front frame rail and the two wrenches were in the tool box of the new 66 series tractor.

The old Hs and Ms came with the standard IH double box-end wrench and there was nowhere to carry it on the tractor. We always hung 'em from the PTO handles.
