Okay, Next Little Irritant

Mornin' Guys,

Another one of my little problems. Aside from the obvious valve cover leak, I've got carburetor issues.

Local red shop put a kit in the carb for me, but somewhere along the line someone has "done away" with the shut off solenoid, which originally enclosed the high-speed adjustment needle.

Now, all there is just a brass plug on the bottom of the bowl. Tractor runs fine at idle and at wide open throttle. But, at any speed in between, it runs rich and gasses pretty darned bad.

Does anyone have any idea as to what they might have done to bugger this thing up? Is there an adjustment needle replacement kit for the high side or am I going to have to look at a different carburetor? I really don't care about the shut off solenoid.

Oh yeah, and I haven't opened it up yet to see just what is going on in there. Could be just a choke hangin' up, I guess.

Thanks,

Allan

A number off the carb might tell us. I know its a MS TSX and if your number on it is like TSX-xxx-SL, the SL tells you it had a solenoid needle valve. Some MS did not have it and did not have a screw type needle on bottom either and just the one needle on top. Just different designs. Zenith/Marvel Schebler catalog doesn't list a Hydro 70 but if its the same 291 engine as a 666 then a later style Zenith 14997 carb should work.

What you need to do is replace your carburetor with a IH carburetor off of a 656 or a 706. I have change several and it makes a hole different tractor.

Hi Jim,

Think you and Chadd are right about this. This darned carb seems to just "dump" with very little 'rationing' or 'metering' going on.

I'll look into that.

Thanks,

Allan

We have that same carb on our 2500A. I have always wondered if maybe that carb is part of the reason that tractor is so doggy. It really doesn't seem to to a very good job controlling fuel delivery. The tractor is really hard to start when cold and seems to be gutless when you have the choke all the way in, but then blows black soot and smoke when you have the choke out a tad, although it feels more powerful with the choke there. I just wish it had some way to adjust the main jet delivery. Then I could just adjust to see where it runs best. Hope you get it figured out. PS Don't hold dealer carb rebuilds in too high of regard. A dealer rebuilt our W6's carb and there is a pinhole 7/8 of the way up the floatbowl they never fixed and the float is set way to high up, as the gasket between the top and bottom half of the carb leaks, and gas drips out of the pinhole if the gas is left on with the tractor off.

Hey Allen that is not the factory carb because the choke cable goes on the back side and does not have that universal choke cable mounting thing .

Naw, it's the right one.

This is a '74 Hydro70. Some of 'em used the Marvel-Schabler carburetor. You're thinking of the IH carb, which has the choke on the inside.

Yea i guess since nobody has a hydro around here . But either way even if the shut down selonid is missing it should not affect the running as when it is on the needdel is fully off the seat or jet . and the only thing would be when hot it would want to diesel on shut down so there must be something missing in the carb and since i did not take it apart and put it back together i don't know for sure . One time late one evening and tomany people around and one tomany barley pops later i left out the main ventura on a 706 carb and did not find it till i wnet to clean the bench off a day latter made me fell real stupid when i had to chase down the tractor and put it in out in the field .

Hey Allen, I might know where there is a rebuilt carb on a junked 656 gas, is it the same carb? I can check and see if it is still sitting out there

Mornin' Dave,

Well this is where my ignorance really begins to shine.

The frame rails set outside the bell-housing on this tractor, the number "301" is stamped into the pad on the left side of the engine and I'm suspecting that maybe this tractor has had a "combine motor facelift" somewhere along the line.

In addition, the tractor has been "farmerized" from front to back, so I really don't know what I'm actually dealing with here. (Note the awful weld on the frame rail/front-end bolster mount).

However, so far everything else has been the same as the 656 owner's manual and 656 IT manual says. Just don't know. :>(

Allan, I had a carb just like that one that I picked up at an auction. I had no need for it, so I opened it up, gave it a good cleaning, and sold it. This one had the solenoid, and near as I could tell, it was working, but the carb was still very sooty inside, like it had been running rich. Maybe its the nature of the beast?

Aw heck,

I dunno. I'm gonna set the valves since I gotta repair that leak at the valve cover anyway, make sure the electrical is up to snuff and then at that point poke around in the carburetor.

Had to replace the muffler the other day and the exhaust is solid soot. Wayyyy too rich, that's fer sure.

But, what the heck. I'm sure havin' fun! :>)
