M steers hard...too hard

Hello, I had a couple questions...We have an old M narrow front that steers hard, harder than a normal M should steer, since my strong-as-an-ox-dad has troubles steering it. I got fed up with it when I was driving it down the road a few days ago and I tried to make a turn and couldn"t make it in time and drove straight into the ditch and back out, quite a ride but I don"t need that to happen by a slough or lake anytime soon. My dad says it could be very bad bearings or it could somehow be a bent steering rod/shaft since years ago a huge round bale landed right on top of the steering post. Well, the question I had was how do I get the steering shaft to drop out of the front end once the pedastal and hubs are off? We also figure we should replace the bearings anyway...I really appreciate the help and comments...THANKS

Josh

yeah, the shaft could be bent. Take the hood off. Now unhook the universal joint by the front of the fuel tank. You might have to slide the collars on the steering post. see if that much turns free without binding. Then with that unhooked try turning the front half of the shaft with a vicegrip. If it still turns hard, the front half is removed by taking out the plug on the front of the bolster, (you will have to remove the grill) turn the shaft and it will tread out on the worm gear, check the bearing and or gear for excessive wear. With the shaft removed and tractor still sitting on ground try turning the wheels with a bar. If they still turn hard, jack up the tractor and see if that helps. Just keep checking one piece at a time and you will find the problem. Nobody said it was easy.

Farm All The Way could be bad thrust bearing on the bottom of bolster shaft. After you remove the lower bolster you will have to loosen the nut on top of the gear so it is flush with top of shaft, if the bolster shaft is tight in the gear, put big hammer on nut and hit it with a bigger hammer to jar it loose the gear and shaft have tappered splines to help heep them tight. I would also check that the bolster housing is thraight up and down.
