i am restoring a 41 farmall b and would like to know what is better. it has a magnito type ingnition (the cap sits horizonal), but i have a spare dist. type ingnition (sits upright with external coil) what would you used on it.

Walter, what part of S. Texas are you in? I have seen this kind of problem before and used a points file to fix it. Just file the points until they are clean.

If your truely restoring it I would use the mag as it would be the origional equipment. Dave.

Well if the mag is good I'd go with the mag. That way it will run even if the battery goes dead. Plus you can hand crank it even with a dead battery.

You need to check the magnets for magnetism, this is what makes your coil fire. Use a flat blade screwdriver and see if those magnets grab that screwdriver. Very little magnetism is a sign the magnets are or are getting weak. I would do this before buying a lot of parts. Parts are available for the IH mag. Hal

That can be as simple as bad points/condenser. Or as bad as a bad coil. Rebuilt mags aren't cheap, last one I got was around $250

yea i haven"t looked into the mag to see how the points/condenser look. this tractor was running then was parked and set there. so it should be to bad to get the mag going.

True Mag don't go bad just from sitting unless they get a lot of water in them, but points do. I'd almost bet a new set of points and a new condenser will fix that mag.
