Leaking Gear Oil from an M

Recently put new gear oil in the M, and filled it up to the proper level.

Now it’s leaking from both axle ends, and right in front of the front gear oil drain plug (the little drain plug at the front end of the gear case).

Not real bad leaks, just the occasional drips, but its making a mess of my barn floor, not to mention after spending $120 on gear oil, it breaks my heart to see it leaking out onto the floor.

Anyone got any simple fixes to slow or stop the leaks, or do I just have to live with them?

Mr, Blue, How are things out your way this evening. A question I have is what weight of gear oil are you using in that tractor. I had 80-90 in my F20 and it leaked like a seive. A older IH man told me that i should be using 140wt in it. I tried it and it was much much better. I understand this isnt a permanent fix but it beats tearing into the tractor, especially if you not going to be using it hard everyday.

Good Luck,

Josh,

Things are cold and windy, getting colder and windy-er.

Are you using straight 140 wt, or a multiweight oil?

Have you tried a few pumps of grease into the axle zerk fittings? It's not a permanent fix but it may slow down the leak.

Just tried that tonight, I'll see how well it works.

I put the grease gun onto the zerk, and started pumping. How do I know when to stop? I thought that you were just suposed to keep pumping until the grease dosen't go into the zerk anymore, but I pumped the handle like 7 or 8 times, and no grease was coming out.

Is it possibble to get that much grease in there? Am I missing something?

Generally, you would grease until it starts coming out the axle seal to make sure the old grease and dirt are pushed out. The amount would depend on how often you grease the axle. I believe the book says to apply 2 or 3 pumps every 10 hours.

You are going to have to replace the seals at the front of the transmission, at the axles and while you are at it might as well do the PTO as well. PTO is easy. Axles require removing the wheels. Front transmission seals require dropping the Lift all hydraulic pump and disconnecting the main drive shaft. Getting the couplings off the transmission input shaft and off the countershaft is required to replace the seals. This will likely not be easy to do. For the countershaft especially, you will have to drain at least part of the transmission oil, as it will run out when you remove the coupling on the shaft that drives the Lift all. As others said, hope your bearings are ok, as excessive play will make the seal replacements ineffective in stopping the leaks.

Hi Blue , I just got an M and removed the sludge from the the gear case and put new gear oil in also . I am having the same problem . Maybe worse than your's . I don't have a service or part's manual yet but I did stop by the Case IH dealer yesterday and they gave me a printout of the rear axle housing and it " look's " easy enough to fix if you have some way to remove the rear tire/wheel's . The seal and felt washer are retained by the piece on the end of the axle . All the part's are available but just hope your bearing's are in good shape because they cost about $ 92.00 each . I only put in about 10-1/2 gallon's of oil and it came pouring out the outer gasket area not from the axle housing end seal . If you want me to scan the part's pages and send it to you post back here and let me know . Good luck ...Randy

Thanks Randy, but I probably won't be needing the scan just yet.

I'm going to hold off on doing anything as extensive as replacing the seals. Once I get the thing fully up and running, I'll see how bad the leaks are and go from there.
