I have a 1954 Super C that is making noise in gear. It only makes noise when in gear and moving. It doesn"t matter what gear it is in it still makes the same noise. It does, however, get louder when under load such as going uphill, etc. I am getting ready to tear it down to replace the clutch anyway so I want to tackle that problem as well. Any ideas what it could be? THANKS!

Steve, Check in your filler hole with a flash lite from your clutch petal in the derection of your seat and look at your tranny gears, Espeicaly at the oil slinger at the farest to the back to see if theres any teeth missing,If so check the pinion bearing that is probley loose at the end of the shaft and cosed the problem,The BAD News is it means complete dissambly of the rear end to fix it, I just done mine last week and i also replaced the input shaft bearing. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I should have been more clear on the type of noise it is making. It is not clunking or grinding but just has a constant loud whine. I already looked at the transmission gears several months ago when I had the pto assembly out for some repairs and all the gears looked good. I put heavier gear oil in at the time to see if it would make a difference and it made no difference at all. I had to pull out my parts manual today to see what shaft bearings you guys were talking about and that is a real possibility. The problem now is I seem to be caught in the snowball effect. I wanted to replace the clutch so I might as well fix the gear noise problem. I want to fix the gear noise so now I might as well fix that leaking axle seal. The joy of owning an antique tractor...

As long as you are putting a clutch in it take the torque tube off and check the input bearing and the coupler for the drive shaft.

I know this probably isn't your problem, but I had a noise that I thought was in the gears. I could feel the knock in the steering wheel and I thought from the lower unit. It only knocked when in gear and moving. My husband checked the wheel bolts on all and found one in front was loose. I could not believe that was the problem. Good luck.

Have you checked the fluid level in the transmission lately? There is a full level plug on the right side of the transmission housing below the deck.
