Ok, back from the shop and they say fuel, compresion and everything is awesome on my 544. But today at 45 degrees It would not start even with a blast of either with out being plugged in for a few hours. The damn thing seems to turn over soooo slow. I think that is the issue. I had the dtarter rebuilt. I was gonna wire it for a 24V start but opted out on advice from this forum. It is currently set up on two 6V in series (= 12V). Crank amps on batts are ( i think 600 CCA. Should I just get two 12V's wire them in parallel and use smaller dia cable as I can not find the big 00 that the 6's have ( they are too short and wrong ends for parallel 12's. Would tghis even help. Every other older 60's-70's farmall deisel I run for neighbors fire right up. I am disgusted with its cold temp bules and am gonna get rid of it if I cant cure it. This is an extremely good shape machine and would rahter keep it, but I need a good starter to keep the 1/2 mile drive open and for the generator in case of a power outage. .PLEASE HELP!!!!! !!!!

Just as a check, you might check your injector pump static timing. After I rebuilt mine, I tried to start it and had trouble. As it turns out, the timing was off. After that, fired right up. Email me if you have questions.

1- Do you understand how to operate the excess fuel control? You must have the fuel control cable held in the excess fuel position, and the throttle 1/4 open.

2- You must be using a circulating tank heater. What size (wattage) is it?

3- Have the biggest diameter cables you can get made. Check with heavy truck shops and starter/alternator shops. THEY CAN BE MADE. No matter what battery arrangement you are using, you need big cables. Forget about 24V. Get two 6V with the highest CCA you can find. Build a battery box and mount it as close to the starter as possible. The shorter the cables, the better.

4- Have the injectors rebuilt. Just trust me on that.

5- If all of this fails, the only other option is a overhaul and installing the late-style pistons. The German engines built after about 1980 start much better than the older ones.

6- Throw the damn ether can away. You've got other problems if it wouln't start with ether. I just got done overhauling a 4320 Deere which had cracked pistons from using ether. That engine was was in otherwise good shape and would not have needed anything more than a head gasket if the guy would have just kept the ether away from it.

7- Your's is a Hydro. I'm not really up on those, but your starter must also have to turn the hydro pump, as it is connected to the engine. Are you using Hy-tran? Has it been changed recently? Does pushing in the inching pedal make a difference in cranking speed?

One more thing.... Have you changed fuel filters recently? No. 1 fuel or a winter blend would also help.

My 756 is very sensitive to cranking speed to. A german with the bosch pump has to have a certain cranking rpm to gererate high enough pump pressure to start. I just got it last spring and have been working on it when I have time. The two 6 volt's on it are in need of replacement. When I put the charger on them for a hour she will turn fast and fire right up. But if I shut it off before it warms up it will turn slow and will not start until I recharge the battterys. You got to keep in mind of the german's hatred of cold weather but with a shot of either and recharged batterys mine will start at 20. Go thru your electrical system from battery to starter. Check all cables and connections with an ohmmeter. Like others have said check the grounding bolts even the starter mounting surface for corrosion. Have that starter retested or try a differant one. Have your batterys load tested to. My 6's are going to be replaced with 12's and all new cables, mainly to get the increased cranking amps in cold weather. As for the battery cables my local NAPA makes up cables with the conecters and gauge you need. If all of this fails and you still feel you have to get rid of it let me know, it would look good sitting next to the 756.

Are you using the Advance on the fuel pump? On those 239 Diesels, if you pull the fuel shut-off lever out about half way it acts like a choke on a gaser. Also good tips below about needing heavy (I think one guage) battery cables-especially ground). I have a 664, even in summer mornings, let it turn over once or so & pull the advance & it fires. Forget the advance & it won't start quick.

Have you put a winter weight oil in the engine yet?

Dave I know you will get some othe ideas on this. But here is how I look at the two 6's over the 2 12's. With the 2 6V battteries in series the charge has to go through both, true if you have one bad battery they might not charge but then you will see that and fix it. If you use 2 12V in parallel you might have just one charge and not other and you will not know that till to late. That 544 should not turn over that hard and you said you had the atarter rebuilt. So then it could be ground and or cables or both and maybe selenoid. The 00 cables can be gotten. Don't use a cable with a repair end on it, use cables made complete from new. Don't grease the cable to post, make sure the are clean and dry and tight, no grease over out side. Saw this many times to just give me greaf when customer said battery and cables are ok only to find out that was all that was bad.

You might want to look at the bushing in the end of the starter it might be too tight on the shaft. Had the same problem on my Super A.
