generator question

this is on another kind of tractor but I figure the principles are the same. The "idiot light" goes off indicating a charge is being put out. The reading at the battery is 12.5 volts when the tractor is running. When I disconnect the battery when the tractor is running it dies. Should it keep running ( ie using the charge from the generator)?? I thinking about putting an ammeter on.

thanks

It may be the cut-out relay in the voltage regulator isn't closed. That depends on the voltage output of the generator. Normally, the cut-out relay closes around 12.8 volts (or 6.5 volts on a 6 volts system). If your generator isn't putting out at least that voltage because the engine RPM isn't high enough or something's not letting the generator put out that voltage, the cut-out relay won't close and voltage won't go to the battery cable. And without voltage going to the battery cable, there's no voltage going to the coil and the engine dies. The easiest thing to do is check the voltage output at the generator.

Jeg, I agree with ElToro. If its good and its charged up, a 12 volt battery should read 12.6 volts just setting, so I wonder how good your voltmeter and/or battery is?? Then depending on it and the genny and how long shes been ran, at wide open it ought to rise to at least 13 volts or more if shes charging?? If charging any lights should glow noticeably brighter from slow idle to wide open, do yours???

Is it staying up n starting the tractor or you need to give her a charge now n then???

Make sure the belts good n tight and that the genny has a good ground n check the battery voltage and light situatuion setting to wide open n let us know... A bad battery may not be capable of accepting a charge you know !! Insure theres electrolyte above all the plates and no cells exhibit a gray or milky color and/or have a shop load test it.

If you need a procedure for testing to see if its a genny or a Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay problem, post back n let me know. What type system (VR or cutout relay) n tractor is it. Some of the Fords have Class B internal grounded field gennys and they are a lil different animal to diagnose. If its a dern Ford you better get SoundGuy to help ya, I'm more knowledgeable about the Class A Delco systems.

Good Luck n God Bless

If you have a trouble shooting guide that would be helpful ( thanks in advance ). I was thinking, should I have checked the voltage the generator was putting out at the generator - it it was 13.5 and it was not at the battery would'nt that conclude the culprit would be the VR?

Thanks ( boy do I struggle with generators/VR)

I don't think your generator is charging. With the throttle at 3/4, the voltage at the battery should be 13.5 to 14.0 volts. Hook your voltmeter
across the battery terminals and measure this
voltage. The engine should run off the generator
if it's working. Your generator probably needs to be rebuilt. Your local auto machine shop
that rebuilds starters and generators could rebuild it and test it. An ammeter is probably a good idea, it will show whether you're charging
or discharging. Hal

I don't know, but I have jump started tractors with dead, and I mean DEAD batteries, and when I remove the jumper cables, the tractor dies.
