I have a 1942 #108195 H. Can anyone tell me which is the right factory seat for this tractor?

Checked my H parts catalog and found three different seats listed as available on the H not counting the Monroe seat which was probably a true aftermarket product. The Monroe seat is the one with the long shock absorber in the rear.
The pipe seat with the coil spring at the front which usually has a small tool box mounted in the curve is noted as being used on s/n 15698 and up. The more commonly seen seat with the mid mounted short shock absorber is also noted as used on s/n 15698 and up. There was a change at s/n 281556 which revised the shock absorber and it's mounting to the seat supports for the latter seat. As noted in one of the earlier posts an earlier seat design was used for s/n's 501 thru 15697 which also had a coil spring at the front. From looking at the parts catalog the pipe seat or the mid mounted shock absorber seat (was probably an additional cost option) would be correct for your tractor. You have a choice between the latter two and your tractor will still be correct. Hope this helps. Hal

I won't disagree with the parts manual, but it is probably the latest edition. I really doubt if the under-seat shock absorber model was available in 1942. It is listed in the parts manual because it will fit, not because it was in production at the time. The aftermarket Monroe seat, with the shock in the rear is more common on those tractors, not sure what year it appeared, though. The 3 seats, pipe (not the 39-40 model), center shock, and rear shock will all fit the non-slot top transmission cover, but only the pipe type was in production by IH in 1942, far as I know. I have a 1941 H with the Monroe seat, but I have no idea when it was added. I would be interested in knowing the year (not necessarily the exact serial number), that the under seat shock type could actually be ordered from the factory.

Your post is appreciated as to fitting certain tractors as my catalog is dated in early 1952. I wouldn't have a clue when the mid-mounted shock seat actually became available from IH. I drove a lot of the letter series Farmalls when I was a kid back in the later 1940's and all I remember about them was they were all silver canvas seats. Maybe some of the early advertising pieces or Guy Fay would have more information as to when the seat was actually available from the factory. Hal

All I remember is the silver canvas also, but I believe the earliest were black. Most of our tractors had improvised padding, etc, as the canvas did not last very long. My dad had 2 B's and 2 H's. The newest, a 47 H, had a silver canvas Monroe seat, that I swear was bought new that way. The dealer could have put the Monroe seat on it, I don't know. I am not old enough to remember what the other 3 had when new, except that the prewar H (or early 40's) had the pipe type seat.

If you will go to tractor photos on left of screen, search for Farmall H, go to page 3 image 42 1941 H by pat there is pictue of H with standard factory seat. Most of the Hs in photos have optional shock type seat (do not know when it was first available but I doubt it was optional in early fortys) or aftermarket Monroe seat. Hope this helps.

I have a 46 H and it has the "pipe" seat not sure how to discribe. it's a pipe with a large spring in the front as a shock. The seat flips up on a set of slidding rails.

Yes, that is correct. There was another style somewhat similar to the pipe seat, but it was used only in 1939 and early 1940.

I am restoring two 39 H's with the channel seat. Was the seat pan covered or bare metal? I saw a 39 on a calender last year and the owner said the pan was covered in black before the silver coverings were used.

Sort of guessing here, but I am sure that the standard seat would have been steel with holes in it. The upholstered seat would have been optional, and black would be the correct color.

I have no proof, but I don't think the factory seat ever had holes. My 41 H with a Monroe seat has holes, but I assume that someone replaced it. I believe all had black covering. All early original pictures I have seen of any letter series were covered.
