Rod Bolt Lock Washer

Trying to remove Rod Cap bolts to plastigauge bearing. Have encountered a washer that blocks access to the bold head. The only way I can see to get it out of the way is to try bending it slightly in order to get a socket on the bolt head. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks!!

Isn't that what it is there for? It is the antique version of a lock washer. I think you just bend it *carefully* out of the way and then remove the bolt. They use something similar on the bolts that hold on the flywheel and the pilot bearing on most older IH's.

Chadd is correct, Use a punch and bend it flatter so a socket will work. Do not replace it with a lock washer, just reuse it and bend it back into contact with the side of the nut. Lock washers have a habit of cracking in half and falling out of an assembly. I throw all lock washers away and use flat washers and locktite to prevent vibrational disassembly. Though my opinion is liable to start a debate. Research done at an old firm (Gary Nut and Bolt) pointed to the low real world value of lock washers.

How many cracked ones have you found?

O.K. - Measured clearances of rod bearings. Bearings which are installed now are stamped .002. Measurements I got at 50# torque were #1-.0035, #2-.004, #3-.0035, #4-.0035. Are these excessive amounts of clearance? Do I need to move up to the .003 undersized bearing? Thanks-John

You should have that crankshaft measured correctly
to determine if it's worn beyond the spec limits.
The rod bearings may have all the wear. You would need a new pair of .002" rod inserts to determine what the clearance is on each journal. I don't think undersize bearings come
in .003". The next size would be .010" undersize. Your crankshaft would need to be ground then. Your mains should be checked too. Hal

If the journals are very round (Measured with micrometers in five radial planes and across the width of the journal, edge, center, and other edge), then I would do the following.
If the new .002 under bearings still measure more than .003 on any bearing, they can be shimmed with .0005 steel shim stock. (placed under the insert, between the rod and the inserts). This stuff is very thin, cut to exact size minus 1/16th inch in length only, no overlap, and it will do the job. The bearing "crush" will hold it in place.
