My Power steering works, then doesn't. I have pleanty of fluid in the old heffer. Is it in the handpump or just filters??? It'll work smooth as you please then just say "NOPE" Then after a few seconds or minutes work again.

last year i had the same problem. the steering worked ok but was sloppy. when we changed the u joints it it would work than lock up and go over relief. the splines between the top and bottom shaft were a little tight not mutch. it is still sloppy and wanders but dosnt lock up. there isnt mutch play but it has a mind of its own

I had a 404 with the same problem. I was told the diverter valve was bad. Never did get it to steer correctly.

It is the nature of the old beast. I had three farmall 504's over the years all with power steering. One even had the wide front with the cylinder underneath. They all experienced loss of power steering occasionally and especially if you quickly steered it. I suspect it was hydraulic bind up in as the hydraulics were fighting the direct mechanical linkage to the steering gear. The only other thing it could be was sticking in the hydraulic flow divicer valve that momentarily lost all fluid to the steering circuit. i suspect it most likely is hydraulic bind up locking fighting the mechanical linkage.

I was visiting with a mechanic friend of mine just yesterday evening and this same subject came up about intermittent power steering. He mentioned that there are some rollers that get flat, don't know if it was in the pump or the actual steering unit. Maybe this helps?
