IPTO Breather Oil Leak

Had a leak coming from around the IPTO shaft, replaced the seal, then the leak went up to the breather cap. Looking at the parts manual, I believe there is a seal between the transmission oil and the IPTO housing. I am thinking that seal is bad and transmission oil is draining out. It looks like a real bear to replace that seal as it may require removing the transmission top plate.

Is there an easy way to replace it? I'm thinking I may just plug the breather pipe. Any suggestions?

The oil level in the transmission of the tractor is higher than the level of the PTO. When the tractor is running the oil will come out of the vent. All you need to do to fix the PTO is pull the unit out and replace the seal in the front of the PTO unit

Frank: How well is the PTO working? The reason I ask this, is the only time I remember oil coming from that breather, PTO was not working well either, and had to be rebuilt. It probably will not work well very long if you plug that breather, as it does have a purpose.

I doubt if your leak is transmission oil, certainly not getting there by graviety. The transmission oil level is below that breather by 3 to 5 inches.

I don't use the PTO now. It's just the mess of the oil dripping on the barn floor, and oil/dirt accumulation when plowing.

I'll check the transmission oil level tomorrow. Maybe it is too full and running through what I am assuming is a bad seal.

When I pulled off the back seal holder to replace the rear seal, not much oil was coming out, so the rear unit must have been pretty much empty. Oil must be coming from somewhere to force it out the breather. Funny thing, the oil in the rear unit was originally leaking out milky, but the transmission oil was not. I never drained and replaced the oil in the rear unit this year like I did the transmission. (I believe the oil weights are supposed to be different too.)

Frank, if you don't need to use the PTO lots of
400 have whats called a seasonal disconnect. You can disengage the drive shaft to the rear PTO unit
and nothing turns in the unit.

Is that the cover under the transmission? Isn't there oil behind that cover? I am looking at the parts manual, and the seasonal disconnect shows a couple of covers with gaskets under the tractor.

I'm probably not looking at the right place.

DWV: Good idea, and good even when your not having problems, reduce wear on the unit. It should also give a clearer picture on the leak, Frank. Do the disconnect, and let us know what happens.

Just remove 4 bolts and take out the PTO unit. Park the tractor going down hill so the tranny oil won't run out and use a piece of pipe over the end of the PTO unit to help remove and re-install. It is heavy so be careful.
