Should this tractor/loader be able to pick up a 1500 lb bale of hay? We can't seem to get the tractor to lift the bales. It will lift them about 3 feet off the ground and run out of hydraulic power. We just replaced the hydraulic pump and filter. It is full of fluid and not leaking anywhere outside of the tractor. What else could be wrong? It's using the tractor hyraulics.

Well if ya replaced the pump with a new one and it still does not lift then i would be checking releif pressure and also what size are the cylinders on the loader and what did it come off of . If the cylinders are large then it just could be running out of oil and you may need to add a littel and run over full . Put a gauge on it and let me know what ya got .

686 was produced at FARMALL from April 1976 to about July 1979.

Something is not right this tractor should have no problem lifting 1,500 lbs. all the way up.

Your not giving me much to suggest what's wrong.

Is this a new problem since you replaced the pump and filter? Also, why did you replace the pump?

What is the make and model of the loader and it's rated capacity? Are the lift cylinders original? If not are they the sams size as the original ones?

Last year was the first year the ranch has used these 1500lb. square bales. They were able to lift them 3 high for a while then the hydraulics got slowly worse. This year I was able to stack one set of bales 3 high then it got worse where I could only do two, now I can hardly lift one off the ground. We took the old pump out and took it apart, it has some wear around the impeller gears but the o-rings were still in place. We put a new pump in, but it didn't fix it. I will have to get the info on the aftermarket loader, I will try to post it today. The hose's hook in the quick couplings in the back above the 3 point and is operated with the levers in the cab which I beleave to be standard equipment on the tractor.

Thanks for the help!

If a new pump didn't cure it, and the transmission is full of hydraulic fluid, my next suspicion would be the relief valve. Unfortunately, I don't know where it is on that particular tractor. There actually may be a relief valve in each hydraulic remote, or it may be in the transmission near the hydraulic pump.

The relief valve pops open and lets the hydraulic fluid blow back into the reservoir when the pressure gets to a set level.

Thanks for the Help! Looks like we have a 70's something tractor. Anyone know where to look for the relief valve and how to adjust it. What kind of pressure should I be looking for if I can find a gauge to put inline somewhere. If I had a bad cylinder wouldn't it visually be weak, extending less then the other side or could you not tell? Is it possible that when that much weight is on and when max pressure is going, all the cylinders are leaking by.

Thanks Again

Hi 7D, according to my I&T Shop Service manual for 544 thru 686 P.105 paragraph 302, to check the hydraulic lift system relief valve requires a Flo-Rater test guage. If the release pressure is less than 1800 psi then replace the relief valve. It does not give a location for the relief valve. On P.111 it shows an exploded view of an aux control valve and there is no relief valve build into the aux control valve.

Some loaders that have their own hydraulic control valves have a relief valve built into the control valve and it is behind the big nut beside the control levers.

Hope this helps

Hi 7D, found picture on P.108 with relief valve shown as item 13, it is located in the lift housing under the seat at the front right corner and appears to be a plug with an "O" ring that screws into the main hydraulic housing. It is either on top right or front right of the casting under the seat.
Most relief valves are a spring with a ball on one end, so be careful if you unscrew this plug as it maybe under spring tension.

Hope this helps

Thanks JB2,

I will look for it tommarow. Is it something that is adjustable? If so I would imagine screwing in would increase spring tension and increase hydraulic pressure. Or does it appear to be a set relief valve, in that case I would need a new spring and ball I assume or maybe there is some contamiation under the ball.

One thing I forgot to add is that the loader will not lift the front end of the tractor off the ground when given down pressure, so I assumed it wasn't running out of fluid and the pistons are not extended, but with the pistons extended going up, it may need to be over full with fluid. Any kind of real loader should lift the front of the tractor off the ground right?

Thanks Again,

7D

Hi 7D, the picture shows it as a single part but the picture is small and can not tell if it is spring and ball but testing procedure says if it is less than 1800 psi then replace the relief valve, so from that statement it would indicate there is no adjustment.

On my Dad's IH 1500, 1550, and 2250 loaders when the relief spring got weak, we would just add a dime (10 cent piece) or two under the nut that held the spring against the relief ball.

Does the loader settle to the ground if you shut off the tractor with the loader up? If it does it very well could be a bad internal cylinder seal on the loader. If it stays were you leave it the loader cylinders are ok. As far as the releif valve goes you cannot adjust it only replace it. Its going to cost around $100 or so but thats about the only other thing that could be wrong. BTW a loader should easily lift the front end off the ground.

The Loader stays up a good while when raised and the tractor is shut off. I raised the loader up and look the radiator out to be boiled out this spring and it stayed up for a least 2 weeks before it slowly came down after that and it seemed to take several days. I would say the cylinders are good from that.

I will take a look tomarrow at the relief valve, the book dosn't happen to give a spring length does it. I could measure that. Without any means to put a gauge in to read pressure, I will have to assume I need a new relief valve.

Any other tips?

THANK YOU

7D
