Finally got our dream property this year. Included is about 4 acres to be mowed every week. The yard is surrounded by woods and has several hardwoods on it. The wife and I love being outside raking in the Fall and never saw this coming. We've been fighting everyday to keep from being overwhelmed. We about got it licked this year, but I need some suggestions for next. We have 2 tractors with a 3 pnt. & a 20 hp garden tractor. Thanks

I just push them onto the garden with the snow blade on the Cub. Works great, and hasn't hurt the lawn any.

A lawn vac is what you need to pull behind your tractor if you have a good machine with a good mower deck, I like the trailer mounted jobber,
don"t have one yet but will buy or fab some day soon hopeful...

I quit raking leaves about 5 years ago. I fight the urge and without fail a strong west wind will come along and blow all the leaves into my east field. Makes me feel like such a jerk for wasting all that time raking for all those years. After the big blow I just mow (maybe) one more time and that"s it.

The lawn experts will tell you to mow them as your lawn needs the dry matter. I put the mulch att on the WOODS and realy does a great job even do them for the 91yr lady down the road.

We just drive over them with the lawnmower to chew them up and then let the wind do the rest. Whatever the wind doesn't take care of usually becomes fertilizer over the winter and spring, helping the lawn out for the next year. If it doesn't help the lawn, it at least doesn't hurt it, and saves me the trouble of raking for a week straight.

That’s one thing I like about where I live, alone out in Timbucktoo. The leaves fall, and blow from the north side of my drive to the south side of my drive, then back again. By the time spring comes, the gravel has ground them up to mulch and they have all blown or washed into the grass on either side, and I didn’t help mother nature out a bit. :>) (BTW, I also like to let the solar snow plow clean my sidewalk off as much as possible…call me lazy or smart, I don’t really care which because neither raking leaves or shoveling snow puts meat on my plate…)

Have a good day…

I have dealt with a similar problem for 20+ years. While though my lot is only 1/2 acre (suburban tract) it is heavily wooded with oak, maple and ash. Fall leaf management is a daunting task.

I've tried about everything and found a walk behind blower works best - much easier than raking, mechanical sweeping or mulching. I blow the leaves into piles at the edge of the road where the town DPW picks 'em up a couple times a week with a large vacuum truck.

But you gotta stay ahead of them!! When they really drop in late October, let the leaves accumulate for more than a couple days or let 'em get rained on (or worse yet snowed on...) and they become tough for even the blower to move.

Also the more powerful the blower the better it works. Mine's a 5-1/2 HP and is OK for my yard. But the lawn service contractors working in the area use 7 and even 9 HP blowers.

I have a similiar situation with 3 acres. Used to have a garden tractor with mulcher then switched to a Toro which did not have mulching capability back then. I do like to mulch mine and leave them for soil buildup. I learned with the Toro to cut/blow leaves driving forward, as usual, then when I get a bulk of leaves I just mow over them backwards and it does better than mulching in terms of fineness of mulched leaves. Sure does beat raking!
Good luck-DC

What else is around you? Other than the trees, what else is going to block the wind from just blowing the leaves away? I live on 2 acres, surrounded by cornfields, right now the lawn is covered with leaves, in a few more weeks the wind will have blown most of them out into the fields, and I may or may not have a small amount of raking to do right around the house.

Rusty..... I like to use your philosophy too. I get the grass cut as short as I can before they fall, and let the wind do most of it. Been outside today? I had to fetch a few things from against the back fence this morning!! What's left in the spring I touch up with the rake. And raking through the grass that time of year seems to give it a good rejuvenation.

I thought I remembered last year of someone posting a pic of their home-made vac mounted on a trailer...

I know people who swear by the pull-behind sweepers that you can get at, for instance, Lowes. For some high dollar ideas check out the DRs at this link.

Mulch it and then use a large towbehind sweeper or buy a little wonder blower.
