alright well im trying to get my 53 super m going again but im just havin a ton of trouble. the block is cracked behind the sleeve and goes from about 3/4 down to the very bottum of the cylinder. im told it cant be fixed. so i found a totally complete m engine and after measuring i found the m has a 4 inch bore and the super has 4 and 1/8. well can i sleeve it and bore it out to accomodate super m pistons? will the head bolt up? can i use the regular m crank and cam? and last but not least does anyone know the easiest way to make it a 12 volt without cutting the hood? thanks alot for all your help!

Take it to a good mach8ine shop and have them bore out the one that is cracked and install a thick wall repair sleeve then bore it to take the standard S/M sleeve all fixed all done have fixed many this way and it will last longer then you.

Some of the tractor owners on have used a Hitachi 12 volt alternator # 1423. They were used on the 78-80 Nissan model trucks 620 & 720. The cost is about $50.00 from NAPA. Hal

Hal, the Hitachi alternator no. is 14231 and is about an inch smaller in diameter then a Delco 10-SI. A 10-SI has no problems fitting on a M without cutting the hood but is difficult to make work on a H while keeping the hood original. The Napa part no. for the Hitachi 14231 alternator is 2138130 as provided by a person on this forum. Hal

For the alternator, I flip the original generator bracket upside down, drill out the holes to 3/8 inch and then put in a long bolt (about 7 or 8 inches) through both ends with a spacer the correct length to align the belt between the front of the bracket and the alternator. This tucks things in tight, allows you to use the stock belt, but leaves very little room for adjustment (which I have never needed anyway). I usually make a shor slot in the top arm to allow for the limited adjustment for tightening up the belt.

Nat is right about the Super M having heavier crankshafts than the M's, but from SN 278050 on,the M had the same crankshaft as the Super M.
You can tell from crankshaft's dimensions. Prior
to SN 278050 the mains measured 2.7475 to 2.7485"
& from SN 278050 on they measured 2.8075 to 2.8085" . Rod journals on the later M's measured 2.5475 to 2.5485" . Hal

Just use your head installing the alternator, and it will fit without cutting the hood. There's plenty of room. Your problem is that you're trying to use the old bottom bracket, unmodified.

As far as the engine goes, I believe you can have the M block bored for the Super M sleeves, but as far as the crank and cam, I don't know. It's my understanding that the Super M crank is heavier, with larger main and rod bearings.

i was just wondering about how much do you think a restored 53 super m with a trip bucket and brand new tires is worth? i plan on spending about 1200 - 1400 on this tractor to get it into good shape again. also how much does a machine shop generally charge to bore out a block and re sleeve it? thanks soo much for all your guy's help!
