SC steering housing leak?

When I got my SC the steering gear housing wasn't leaking a bit 'cause there was no oil in it! I put some in and it leaked like a sieve so I rebuilt it using all new gaskets and seals. Nothing showed significant wear. I refilled with 90W-140 oil. Now it doesn't leak when standing still but leaks when in motion. An old local shade tree mechanic told me that these never hold oil and I just as well fill it with gun grease. Thoughts on this advice?

It's sort of with mixed emotions that I admit I'm embarrassed. Upon much closer analysis I find it's the front cover on the engine that's leaking, not the steering housing.

Some of the oil pan bolts on that motor go through into the crankcase (their not blind but tapped all the way through) and will leak. I have tried to stop my Super a from leaking twice wit o luck. I think it is the coner bolts that are the problem.

Sounds like a shade tree mech. You need to replace the seal in the bottom of the sector. Have rebuilt some of these in the last few years and the new seal will stop your leak. Do you need the CARQUEST# ?

I did replace that seal and all others - gaskets too, yet it does seem to be leaking around that main shaft at the bottom of the housing. Everything seemed to go together OK too.

Were the bearings good with no play. Any play and you will have a leak. The main shaft must have a smooth good surface for the seal to run on. I've done two of these and on one of them, I used a "Speedy Sleeve" to give a new surface for the seal. The installation tool that came with the sleeve would not work, had to make one out of some PVC pipe. No leaks on that one, the other had a better main shaft. It seeps just enought to catch some dust. Also, did you check the seal holder very carefully. These are frequently cracked. I had to replace one of these.

As I said, there was no significant wear anyplace. I put in a new seal retainer too! A mystery to me. If these things are known to hold oil, I guess I'll have to take her down again and see if I can find the problem.
