Gentlemen this is my first post here. I am looking for info on the front end alignment for my 52 super M. should the wheels be parallel or how much toe-in should there be. I had noticed that the front wheels were not parallel and and it felt as if this was causing hard steering. No powersteering on this old girl. I started checking and found the right tierod end to be loose on the adjustable tierod. I pulled it apart and found that at some time in the past the tierod had broken inside the tierod end and 2 inches of the tierod end had been left inside the tierod end. There was only about 3/4 of an inch of threads left on the tierod and no jamnut. This had finally gotten loose from the strain of loaderbuckets full of dirt and snow and handling 1600 lb hay bales. I drilled out the broken shaft end and cleaned out the threads in the tierod end, then rethreaded the tierod about 4 inches. I'm ready to go back together but want to set the toe-in correctly to facilitate steering. THanks to all of you for all the great info I have soaked up reading this forum.. Tallperson

If there were no play at all in the steering, there would be no need for toe-in. The only reason for it is so that the wheels are parallel when under way straight ahead. The more wear in the steering system, the more toe-in is necessary to combat it. That's true of autos too. When turning, the wheels are supposed to toe OUT.

Give it 1/8" to 1/4" of toe in, also make sure both tie rods are the same lenth when you are done. You don't want all the toe in created on one side.

I am not 100% on what tractors should be, but on an automobile, you set the toe in 1/8-1/4".

I don't know what is correct, but, personally, I align mine true parallel, no toe in at all and they all steer very nice without PS. Plus, I figure I will reduce tire wear as well. The tractor I took on the 3 day ride this summer was that way and was very comfortable and I never tired from pulling in the wheel.

Just guessing but I would say somewhere between 1/8 to 1/4 inch of toe-in.

The toe-in should be 1/8-1/4", more if everything is worn much. What you are trying for is to have the front wheels parallel when moving forward.

That said, your hard steering might be from worn components such as thrust bearings, bushings and etc., since you said you used the tractor with a loader.

I checked my 504 book and its just what you would expect 1/4in + - 1/16
